Good Question Sue

Good Question Sue...

The answer is more a matter of personal preference for the task at hand.

To help you; consider how well you see currently using Incandescent lights and how well you see where Fluorescent lighting is prevalent (i.e.: the classroom). This should at least give you a starting point for comparison.

One word of caution; while 120 volt LED light bulbs do have the color temperature and lumens printed on the packaging; and, for the most part, you can rely on this information, the same information (and your ability to rely on that information) may not be available in the world of 12 volt bulbs. Sometimes the Color Temperature may be listed and sometimes it is just a matter of comparing two photographs in the advertisement.

If the price is right, buy multiple bulbs in both Color Temperatures and try them in your various light fixtures.

I can guide you to one light fixture that I bought personally that has a very good "Warm" color temperature (the same fixture is available in cool white also). This is a USB light and I paired it with a USB power pack that will run this light for 8 hours or so.

Here is the posting with that information:

Good luck and please let us know what you decided.

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!

Great info Manwithavan!

Great info Manwithavan! Between you and Joan I'm getting a better grasp on this. I think I'm heading to a hardware store soon to try my eyes with the warm light or the cool light just to see what my preference in that regard will be. Then I will try to focus on the lumens. I have till September but when I arrive in Minnesota to get my Scamp I want to have the bulbs with me to switch out. I'm a planner and I really appreciate everyone here helping me get prepared.

Hoping your adventures are wonderful,
Sue

That nifty light bar

Sue and ManWithaVan, I couldn't resist getting that nifty cheap light bar for myself as a pre-Christmas present. I took it out to the Scamp, with the associated power pack, and it does indeed give a nice light that I can use in those spaces that are on the dark side. I don't remember it being particularly bright though.

But this discussion reminds me that the "reading lights" that are typically mounted in the back end of the trailer, over the bunks, are optional. In my opinion, they're indispensable if you plan to do any kind of eye-work inside the Scamp, so if they're not on your order, you should add them. They should work reasonably well for correcting papers. You can always swap out the bulbs in those for a higher temp color and maybe higher lumens, in LED lighting. Shoot, maybe you could even get them to mount *4* of these over your main work area! One in each corner, maybe. Given what I know now about my light requirements for needlework, I'd definitely check into that.

Yep it's 4!

Going Light, It's so good to receive confirmation. You know when you place your Scamp order you commit to spending lots of money and then you start doubting all the options you added to the trailer and their expense. I hadn't said anything but I had added four of those LED optional lights -- in the four corners of the trailer (back corners and under the front cabinet above the bunk beds in the front corners). So you suggesting this makes me think I didn't go overboard and that's an option I will likely use, and repeatedly! I'm so glad to hear these particular lights work well, and I will definitely see if their lumens are enough or I will swap out their bulbs. Thank you for adding in on this discussion!

Hoping your adventures are wonderful,
Sue

I changed all the bulbs in

I changed all the bulbs in our old Scamp except for the reading lights in the back, over the bed. I liked the warm look of those bulbs.

Where to Experience with Your Own Eyes the Warm to Cool Tones

Just an add on to the discussion. I love all I've been learning but really wanted to see how my vision would like/adjust to the warm to cool range. So I stopped by a Home Depot here in town and discovered they have these 3 part cubicle boxes in their store (like 3 separate boxes attached to each other) with a light bulb in each box labeled 2700 soft white, 3000 bright white, and 5,000 day light. My eyes knew immediately that I liked the 2,700 and the 5,000. And this wonderful employee explained he usually uses the 5,000 up to 5,700 for "tasking" (the does wood work in a big shop at home) and he liked the 2,700 for the bedroom (it kind of reminds me of the warmth of the light thrown off by the fireplace or candles). So if you want to see this with your own eyes, before purchasing replacement bulbs, a hardware store in your area may have something like this, too.

So saying, I could get my explanations and my visual from Home Depot but they didn't actually carry the RV bulbs there. He said he buys most his LED bulbs online at 1000bulbs.com. I've given that a quick glance and they do have an RV area but I have yet to check prices between 1000bulbs and the suggestions ManwithaVan gave.

Oh, and I have yet to "see" the lumens issue but I'm not as curious about that because you all gave me great explanations and I have a better understanding of lumens from learning to buy decent flashlights!

Hoping your adventures are wonderful,
Sue

Second set of tail lights

Does anyone have a picture of a Scamp with a second set of tail lights? I'm curious what it looks like as I am considering this option. Thanks. Tony

Second set of tail lights

Wow! I just spent some time looking for a picture and found NONE. I am thinking about adding them to my order. They are the same lamp, mounted directly above the others but above the bellyband. They cost too much  ($95)  but would add needed visibility if you block the view of the stock lamps by carrying bicycles.  UP DATE, FOUND ONE:   http://www.scamptrailers.com/ask-scamp/towing-your-trailer/before-you-go...

Tail Lights

cant have enough lights, very good option. What is Scamp wanting to charge for the second set?

I'd like a light bar over the top of the rear window as well, but those are usually done aftermarket

Addding a Second Set of Taillights

Adding a second set of taillights would be a fairly simple DIY project after you take delivery of your new Scamp.

Additionally, you could choose to add a pair of LED light bars which might look better than the two box-like tail lights installed by Scamp.

If you have LED lights installed for the second set of lights you could install a "Quick Flash" module to attract more attention from inattentive drivers behind you.

This would be a good DIY project for any Scamp Owner to add to their Scamp (or SOB) for increased safety (those quick flash modules really get your attention).

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!
