Insurance

I have insured Scamp through the Good Sam folks (National General). It covers damage to the trailer, full replacement value if totaled or stolen and trailer-related liability coverage like if I back the trailer into a car. My car insurance is with State Farm. The NG feels like a great deal, only about $200 a year

Fortunately I've not needed to use it. I got to thinking, what happens if I'm in a accident while towing Scamp. Who covers what and am I leaving myself liable with some finger pointing of which company should pay for what.

When I checked a few years ago, the cost to add the trailer to my car insurance was quite a lot and that would not have been full replacement. I'm guessing the NG insurance is based on most trailers being parked most of the time.

I'm going to speak with my agent but wondered if anyone has experience with this situation.

My 2 cents...

What you pay is mostly based on the value of the trailer. The trailers down time is not a factor. A tree could total it falling on it; a fire or theft loss would be equally as bad. I use Progressive. They have a deal with my main insurance,  USAA because USAA doesn't insure trailers. I don't know if this makes them cheaper for everyone or just for USAA customers. You do need to check with the rest of your insurance companies. Usually while towing- the automobile insurance covers it; when parked at home- the home owners insurance covers it. For fault involving someone uninsured, mine covers the uninsured claim. Lastly, in accidents where you are not at fault- the other guy's insurance covers it. Also note, for instance- if your other insurance has a limit that the loss exceeds, then your trailer insurance should pick up the excess loss above that limit. It's kinda involved...

Insurance clarification

I followed up with my State Farm agent. My car insurance is with them while my trailer coverage is with National General. I'm not very concerned about an accident that is not my fault. That's covered by the other drivers insurance. There's an issue of uninsured but that's a different question. My concern was liability if I'm at fault.

She confirmed a) that when towing, my car liability coverage applies to both damage caused by my car or the trailer, and b) that damage to my trailer would not be covered. That would be covered by my policy with NG.

Of course damage (or theft) to the trailer outside of an accident - fire, tree falling, etc. - would be covered by NG with no involvement of SF. I'm going to look into what trailer coverage SF can offer just to keep everything simple in case of an accident but my guess is the $200 NG policy for full replacement value coverage is a good deal.
