Extras

I always get extras, very cheap to add some to your road kit. The caps will disappear occasionally and it's good to have a new one to snap on before the base deteriorates. You'll be popular at gatherings if you have extra with you.... laugh

SS Screws

I replaced all my rivets on my 81 Scamp 13 years ago with SS Bolts/Nuts. One Caution, it will run over $300 to do an entire trailer in SS vs Rivets which will cost about $50.

If I recall I used mostly #10 and #8 and various lengths depending on location. As to the snap caps there are two parts, the washer which the bolt or rivet goes through before inserting (See posts above) and the actual snap cap which snaps over the washer to keep water from running down the barrel of the rivet. I recommend you buy all new washers and snap caps. They are cheap and will be rotted or on their way to rotted if they've been on there any length of time. The best source is prodec which I link to in post #1 and they get them to you pretty quickly. The butyl tape I always do when I replace them which is an extra step most folks don't do, but never had a rivet/bolt leak since I've done that process.

SS screws

The larger rivets are 3/16". I normally just just use pop rivets and backer washers for replacements. In some location the rivets are prone not to last and I use SS screws on rare ocassion. I use SS Pan head 10-24 screws with a washer on the inside with nylock nuts. The heads of these screws will work with the cap bases. I normally use new bases but in a pinch you can reuse the old base if not damaged or cut. The key to using screws/nuts is not to tighten  down the screw/nut to the max. just snug it so it is not too loose and you do not distort the outer shell. If the outer skin hole is in good shape I just use a little butyl tape under the base. If the outer skin hole is a little damaged I may use 5200 sealant. Just remember there is carpet and refletix between the inner and outter surfaces on the post 85 Scamps and the connections are designed to float a little.

Thanks for your thoughts and

Thanks for your thoughts and specific measurements!  It all made a little more sense when I started taking things apart.  And, as a bonus, I found a bag of unused snap caps hiding under the front bunk.

snap caps

I have what may be a really dumb question but this is all new to me.  Are these the snap caps?  I seem to have two different kinds on my Scamp..

Rivets - No Snap Caps

Those are a philips head screw and rivets with some fairly advanced spider cracking in the gel-coat. You have no snap caps in the pics. See the pics in post #1 to see the snap cap.

I, for one, would be

I, for one, would be interested is knowing what these are securing.  Especially, the philips screw (the "x")... It sure looks like an owner mod and likely an example of how not to do it.

Screws

There are several philips screws on a 13 in the front and the rear that go through the shell and into wood blocking on the interior. There isn't enough info in this pic of where these particular ones are located on the trailer to tell if that is what it is. From what little we've seen though here and in the VIN post, I think one can conclude that this is what we call a "project trailer."
