Rear carrier weight

There's been lots of discussion on tongue weight, overall camper weight, vehicle towing weight. What about weight of a storage box on a rear hitch? I have a 13' Scamp with two propane tanks and a battery on the front hitch. My tow vehicle is a 2013 Outback with 2,700# towing capacity. I'd like to carry stuff like the chocks, outdoor rug, etc, in a rear storage box because the over-the-hub storage area inside is so inconvenient to find things.

What say you all?

Rear Carrier Weight

Our "Lil Critter" was born in Nov of 2005 with dual tanks and battery on her drawbar.  We started Scamping with a small Chev S-10 pickup.  After the first year, Bev insisted on getting Old Jake, a very large, wonderful Lab (He would actually let Bev and I sleep in his $9,000 dog house on wheels.  LOL), inside a warm vehicle while traveling.

We set up our car, a Chev Equinox, for pulling the "Lil Critter" (hitch receiver, extra tranny cooler, electric wiring to hitch, and brake controller).  After all the changes I found that space for trailer setup stuff was very limited and inconvenient.

After much debate about weight (messing up balance of trailer) and stress on the back of the Scamp (platform jarring up and down on rough roads and RR crossings, etc), I designed a small cargo box with legs that bolt to the top of the Scamp bumper to support all cargo weight (mininum weight hanging far out on the back of the trailer).  The box sits above the spare tire and uses the spare tire mount for vertical support.  The box is small, about 6 inches thicker than the spare tire so it does not stick out back very much, it only fills the space from the top of the spare tire to the bottom of the Scamp rear window, and is the width of the trailer.  It is plenty big for carrying a scissors jack, a couple of  aluminum jackstands, water hoses, plenty of wooden blocks for setup and a small tool kit for maintaining trailer bearings and brakes.  I carry my Scamp grass rug rolled on top of the box.

For some reason, the box has become known as the "Lil Critter's bustle".

In my not so humble opinion, LOL, anyone that decides to mount one of those hitch receiver platforms on the back of their 13' trailer had best place heavy items like jacks and tools as close as possible to their trailer bumper or they will lighten the weight on the trailer ball so much they will get dangerous sway on the road.  I doubt that the little light weight trailer bumper will take much abuse from a weight banging up and down on the end of a receiver back there due to the previously mentioned rough roads.

The Scamp bustle has withstood the test of time and miles.  Over 190,000 miles including the Apache Trail in the Superstition Mts in Arizona, north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska, Northern Wisconsin concrete roads, etc since the bustle was installed and so far, no failure except for having to replace the two support legs because the character (me) who installed it originally did not have drain holes in the bottom of the legs and water got inside and froze, splitting the seams on the tubing legs.

Thanks for rear hitch response

I'll show your reply to Mel, my handyman/mechanic/electricia/life partner. Right now, all of the very important necessities are in a laundry basket (my favorite brand of luggage) that I'll carry at the back end of the Outback for easy access, along with a Rubbermaid tub for the tabletop grill, charcoal, etc. That still leaves enough room for folding chairs, guitar, food box, etc. Love that Subaru! I came home from our first outing with so many bruises and scratches from trying to retrieve things out of the around-the-hub storage that I vowed to plaster that area shut. Could you post a picture of the bustle since it's doubtful that we'll be camping with you (MN to CA is a stretch!) for an up-close inspection?

Thanks again! I'm learning so much from everyone's postings.

Bustle Photo

Here is the only photo I have of the "Lil Critter's" bustle.  Never posted pics before.  Second try....hope it works.

Wow!!! It worked.  When I get to the trailer, I will take a photo showing more detail.  This photo was actually only showing my daughter down in the Mohave Desert what she is missing here at home.  ;>)

"Lil Critter's" bustle

Yup,

I am Finnish by marriage!  Bev was born in Virginia, MN.  We spend a LOT of time in MN and the UP of MI doing Finfests and family reunions.  Leaving today for a three month Scamp-about and part of the time will be up in that part of the U.S.

Hei Hei  (bye bye for the normal folks on this chat)

my nickle's worth

First - TRUST BOB.

We have a 19' 5th wheel, and adding a box on the rear of it changed the way it towed a LOT.  MUCH more sway.  And the 5er style is inherently more stable than a bumper pull.

Weight of bumper box

Hello,

We have ordered a 19 DL and I intend to add a box for the necessary set up items since there is no outside access hatch (yet). The TV bed is pretty small and the roll up cover box takes up some so there's not a lot of room there for items that need to be locked up when travelling.

The "tray" will come from Harbor Freight, attach to the bicycle hitch, and weigh about 25#s. I'll attach some kind of locking truck box to it and load that so the total back there should be about 85#s.

Please let me know how much your bumper box weighs and could it be offset some by putting clothes things inside on the bed mattress while towing. We don't tow with water in the fresh tank.

Along the same line, I'm thinking of spending the extra $250 to get the axel that will take 15"  wheels and load D tires (same setup as my Casita) and 3" lift. I have a driveway clearance issue. Might that set up help mitigate the sway problem? TV is 2015 GMC Canyon and bed wall height is 53" AGL.

Thanks, Bob
