Our "Lil Critter" was born in Nov of 2005 with dual tanks and battery on her drawbar.  We started Scamping with a small Chev S-10 pickup.  After the first year, Bev insisted on getting Old Jake, a very large, wonderful Lab (He would actually let Bev and I sleep in his $9,000 dog house on wheels.  LOL), inside a warm vehicle while traveling.

We set up our car, a Chev Equinox, for pulling the "Lil Critter" (hitch receiver, extra tranny cooler, electric wiring to hitch, and brake controller).  After all the changes I found that space for trailer setup stuff was very limited and inconvenient.

After much debate about weight (messing up balance of trailer) and stress on the back of the Scamp (platform jarring up and down on rough roads and RR crossings, etc), I designed a small cargo box with legs that bolt to the top of the Scamp bumper to support all cargo weight (mininum weight hanging far out on the back of the trailer).  The box sits above the spare tire and uses the spare tire mount for vertical support.  The box is small, about 6 inches thicker than the spare tire so it does not stick out back very much, it only fills the space from the top of the spare tire to the bottom of the Scamp rear window, and is the width of the trailer.  It is plenty big for carrying a scissors jack, a couple of  aluminum jackstands, water hoses, plenty of wooden blocks for setup and a small tool kit for maintaining trailer bearings and brakes.  I carry my Scamp grass rug rolled on top of the box.

For some reason, the box has become known as the "Lil Critter's bustle". 

In my not so humble opinion, LOL, anyone that decides to mount one of those hitch receiver platforms on the back of their 13' trailer had best place heavy items like jacks and tools as close as possible to their trailer bumper or they will lighten the weight on the trailer ball so much they will get dangerous sway on the road.  I doubt that the little light weight trailer bumper will take much abuse from a weight banging up and down on the end of a receiver back there due to the previously mentioned rough roads.

The Scamp bustle has withstood the test of time and miles.  Over 190,000 miles including the Apache Trail in the Superstition Mts in Arizona, north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska, Northern Wisconsin concrete roads, etc since the bustle was installed and so far, no failure except for having to replace the two support legs because the character (me) who installed it originally did not have drain holes in the bottom of the legs and water got inside and froze, splitting the seams on the tubing legs.
