Mouse Hole Update

The Furrion Kit worked really well for us ...... Furrion FCKIT30-PS White 30 Amp Conversion Kit with LED Inlet

The instructions were easy to understand , quality of all the parts were excellent the kit actually came with a pre cut square backing plate ..... We also like the fact that the cover has a blue LED light to let us know if our power is on and also like  that the little blue light will help us  stay clear of the cord and also less of a chance some one could trip over it especially at night ...

Old Mouse Hole ( what was left of it )

Nice kit with backing plate

Clamp backing plate on outside  used it for a pattern to drill also helped prevent fiberglass from chipping .....

The back side of plug ....

Back side of plug with retainer....

Ironically while I was putting the new mouse hole in today we had a visitor !!!!  I knew I should have worn my work boots today instead of my sandals

Putting female end on my existing cord .....

Male side of socket

Cover with cool blue LED light ......

Eventually would like to get the angel adapter so the cord will go straight down.....but this is good for now .....

I secured the cord in the storage compartment ..... Wow look at all the new space that I now can utilize ......

Mouse hole conversion

I'm getting ready to do this. Quick question:  did you use the rubber gasket that came with the Furion, butyl tape, both?  Want to ensure I am water tight. Thanks!!

RE: I'm getting ready to do this.

Rubber gasket. Followed the instructions to the letter except that I also added a very small bead of RV Pro sealant to the edge of the larger round plate on the outside of the trailer, and to the bolts on the outside that hold the larger round plate to the trailer wall. That might not be needed but its a little more insurance.

In my photo you can see the daps of sealant on the bolt heads but the bead on the outside edge of the round plate does not show up because it is just that small.

Even though they are exposed when the cover is open, there is no need to seal the screws that hold the male part of the plug to the round plate because they do not penetrate the trailer wall.

I think once you get the parts in place you will see how well it seals.

Like it

Steve,

Really like the look of that kit and that they include a backing plate, usually have to make that. I've added this thread to the Modifications table of contents.

Nice work!

Mouse hole update

I* installed the Furrion FCKIT30-PS mouse hole conversion kit along with a Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C Hardwired 30 Amp RV Surge Protector. I used all new 10/2 with ground cable from the inlet, to the Surge Protector, and from there to the power distribution (fuse and circuit breaker) box, thereby having the full length of my original 30 amp cable available.

Apparently Furrion has made a few changes in their product. I noticed that the instructions for adding the female plug did not completely match the parts I had. Therefore the kit that Steve got might have included a backing plate, however I think what he used as a backing plate is actually intended to go with the included metal junction box for a surface mount option.  In the second photo in Steve’s post you can see a round white plate in the top on the box.  This plate is for covering the mouse hole on the outside. The inlet receptacle has four short screws that hold it to this plate.  Then the plate (with the receptacle attached), bolts to the body of the trailer with three bolts (or rivets if you prefer).  The holes in the round white plate are supposed to line up with the same three holes used by the original mouse hole cover, but of course on my Scamp they did not line up.

I don’t see a problem with using the junction box plate as a backing plate and forgoing the white outside plate, except that the supplied screws are not long enough to go through the fiberglass (because they are intended to only mount the inlet to the outer plate) so you would need longer screws.  One or more of the three holes from the original mouse hole cover might also be exposed and need to be patched. Of course if it is a new install (no existing inlet hole) then that’s easier. And yes I know that Furrion’s website shows an install without the round, white outer plate but that photo does not match the instructions I got with the kit (see attached).

I patched all three bolt / rivet holes in the fiberglass even though they are covered by the outside mounting plate.  I used a piece of 1/8 plywood as a backing plate inside the trailer, wedged under the insulation, with bolts secured with nylock nuts. My backing plate is a good bit larger that the junction box plate that came with the kit.

I put the remote for the Surge Protector / EMS (and a Charge Wizard that I added to the converter) on the upper inside wall of the cabinet where the water pump switch is. In my camper this is a big open area.  It requires one to open the door and crane your neck to see them, but usually I only look at it once after hooking up power to make sure all is well, then ignore it.  And its quite bright at night so this way it is hidden away and required no holes in fiberglass.

Question on patching

Gordon2 - Nice post and nice pictures, especially the one with the exterior plate.  I will do this mod using Furrion product when I take delivery.  What did you use to patch the original rivet holes?

RE: Question on patching

Thanks for the nice words.. I don't recall for sure but it must have been JB Weld or Bondo to patch the holes.  But fear not, they are small and should be covered by the gasket so even if you don't patch the rivet holes it should be fine.  I just like to make sure so I go the extra mile.

Nice surge protector

Hi Gordon ,

nice surge protector set up unfortunately it is a little over our budget for us and we really needed the extra storage space .... Fortunately the Furrion covered our pre existing holes although I still did fill them .  Yes the kit did include a round white plate just in case the cover does not cover the hole I started to install it we did not care for the appearance of it and saw the potential for rusting as well as adding another gasket that could lead to potential leaking ......Yes the backing plate is the galvanized piece that comes in the kit for the junction box that is not used for this installation (probably used for a motor home or large stick built trailer) .....I really liked working with the Furrion kit however I still eventually would like to get the angle adapter for the cord as I do not like it sticking straight out the side of the trailer    wink
