Shelf covering

I am enlarging the openings in the narrow closet between the bed and the door, and adding an additional shelf to both the top and bottom sections. The original shelves are covered with carpet that has a foam backing. It does help keep things from sliding around when towed, or at least I imagine so. Maybe the foam helps cushion bumps? I don't put anything breakable in there.

I could just finish the shelves as they are AB sanded plywood but I'm thinking of perhaps using commercial grade (dense, low pile) carpet. I also thought about cork

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

Thanks. Tom
