Scamp 5th Wheel Tire Wear

Note:  I am posting this for a couple, Don and Peggy, that were stuck in Nova Scotia on a trip with this issue and are now enroute home to GA.  They will be joining when they get home and I'll assign this to their account when they come online.  In the meantime they felt this was good information for SOI members to have.

Since purchase of 2000 Scamp 5th wheel in 2005, have never got more than 3500 miles out of trailer tires on driver (and refrigerator) side of camper, despite keeping 50 # pressure consistently in it, and reducing wgt. by placing wgt. over front of camper.  Typically, wear pattern on inside of tire looks as if someone used an axe to chop pieces out.  Suspect is torsion bar.  Any members have similar problems?

“Not sure about that problem.

“Not sure about that problem.  There have been axle warnings on the Yahoo Scampers forum for several years.  It is still there.  I had mine looked at and it was determined the holding brackets were put on backwards.  Kent, at Scamp, gave me instructions on how to fix, which I did.  I'm not sure if the problem described below is the same problem.  I haven't found that kind of problem with my tires.  - - Earl”

Update:

Update from Don & Peggy:

Had the 19' scamp 5th wheel checked for severe tire wear on inside of drivers side tire, and was advised the axle is bent  Pretty pricey to ship it to Nova Scotia from Scamp, but other options were by very slow freight, and did not want to leave here by possibly the middle of December for our home in GA., so paid the double shipping charge for international delivery.  Will update if anything worth telling.

Most recent Update:  (Guess

Most recent Update from Don & Peggy:  (Guess if ur stuck somewhere waiting on an axle and replacement, Nova Scotia, would work pretty well.  We wish them safe journeys home and it sounds like they may have found a resolution to their long term issue.)

Had Cape Breton Trailer Sales replace the bent axle, and they reported poorly welded alignment when we had the camper lifted with 2" square tubing by a general welding shop (when the deeper truck bed on new tow vehicle would not accommodate the removable 5th wheel removable and extended height ball that I wanted for useful bed space when not trailering).  Additionally, the middle of axle was also welded to the camper frame, which they said was a no-no, as it makes the ride too firm.  Hope this insight will help some other unwary owner, who is trying to save a buck (the less skilled repair can cost much more than you save).

Let me sound the praises of Cape Breton Trailer Sales.  Not only were we treated tremendously better than any previous contacts in the Cape Breton (Nova Scotia) when we sought help, they were the best for pricing, including a significant saving on the replacement tires.  Time will tell how good the repair is, but we parted friends of this company, and intend to use them again whenever needed.
