Scampfire

We just picked up our 2013 Scamp 13 last weekend.  Its in great shape but has not been used much ever.  That said it needed some maintenance that had not been done in years. The heater would stay lit  so I cleaned out the intake which was full of mud from wasps and fixed that.  The water tank flame was not blue but a lazy orange so I cleaned that and now that works.  Fridge propane pilot would not stay lit so cleaned the burner.  Looking at the diagram, the burner jet may be missing.  I don't think it  was not on the end of the gas pipe unless its firmly attached there. It did not appear to be in the burner.  There were bug parts in there though and I cleaned all that out and reassembled everything.

I turned the control to high like the instructions say and tried to light with the electric piezo but it would not light but I was able to get the pilot to light with a flame.  Stopped pushing down on the control and it stayed lit.  Success!  Or maybe success. I heard the sound of gas hissing.  Seconds later flames were coming out of the vents above the vent you open to access the fridge controls.  I quickly ran to turn of the tank and the flames went out.

Any idea what would cause this?  We are heading out this evening to camp with our new Scamp and I am wondering if its safe to use the stove and heater?

Thoughts?

Orifice

It sounds like when you took the burner apart you lost the orifice. This is very easy to do as it is a very tiny part with a mind of it's own if it gets loose. The orifice is usually what you clean out very carefully as it's a tiny hole and it regulates how much gas gets sent to the pilot. If it were missing you probably would experience a gas torch type scenario.

Call these guys as they are one of the best part shops for furnace, fridge parts, etc.

So Easy

When I had to de bug/web my fridge burner I found it tough to do in the tiny spot to work in and it used three different fasteners Torx, Phillips, hex then wrenches to remove. so no easy quick solution and once taken apart the orifice that used to be made of brass is now a tiny thin disc of aluminum that tried to get lost several times. So it does sound like you are missing it, so nothing to limit the gas supplied to the Burner once lit and explains the fire.  . If not turned to the on position  it should not have any gas flowing so the furnace and water heater should work normally.

Wonderful

Glad it did not escape into the wild. I have considered buying a spare. but never did. It is a bit of a challenge to get it to sit in the fitting while you put it together straight but not too bad. If my memory is any good the shape also makes it double as the orifice and flare gasket
