Generator Transportation

Greetings!

So, I'm watching for "THE Scamp" to show up for me, and planning, and daydreaming, and such....And I came up with a question.

There are times I may want to run my AC at a dry camp.  And that means a generator.   I'm OK with that.  And I have heard suggestions , to buy a 3000 watt, or maybe a "pair" of 2000 watt inverters (two somewhat smaller packages, and only bring one in cooler weather.  Costs more, twice the maintenance, and so on....).  Lots to consider.

But heres' the real question....  My TV is NOT a pickup truck.  It's an SUV,  So what does everyone else do with their generators (and a fuel can, maybe?)

Mount it on the tongue?  I'm not sure I want to add 75+ pounds to my tongue.

Add a "rear" carrier, off the back bumper?  OK...But even if I reinforce it adequately for the weight, I can imaging an extra 75 pounds would really help the "tail wag the dag", so to speak.

Carry it "inside" the Scamp?  I cam imagine what the fuel smell, and the generator itself, will do to my camper and the floor...

Carry it inside the SUV in the back?  I have the room....But that sounds like the least desirable option.

Any ideas, comments, or suggestions?  I will admit, I dearly love my AC in the heat, and would not willing give it up.  So....Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  I mean, I can't be the only guy out here with this issue...can I?

My generator

Hal,

I used to carry the generator in the back of my Jeep.   I never liked that and I didn't like taking it in and out of the Jeep.

I was camping one winter and so envious of other campers that were using their generators.  It was raining and I had no where to put my generator that would have been dry, so it didn't get used.

After being at the Scamp factory and seeing that they had found a center jack which would work on a 13 footer, I purchased one and came home, removed the folding side jack, reconfigured the 3 items on the tongue and built a box.   The generator is in the box with the propane tank and the battery is forward of the box.  I have a dedicated 30 amp cord plugged into one of the sockets on the generator.  The cord runs under the trailer, attached to the frame and up through a small hole where I added an outlet to it.  The outlet is secured to the floor of the electrical cabinet.  To use the generator I just reach in the compartment and plug the 30 amp umbilical cord into the outlet go out to the box, open the deck plates and flip switches and pull the starter cord.  Voila'....in business.

I'm not really one to boast but this is my most proud modification of all the ones I've made to my Scamp.

Very Impressive!

Really nice job on the tongue box!!

Thank you so much for the input!  I really like the idea!  May I ask which generator you are using?  Do you have an A/C unit?  And how long can you operate the generator between fill ups? And lastly, have you had any problems with the generator overheating while running?

Thanks again!

OK, I'm trying this again.

OK, I'm trying this again.  This site has been driving me crazy.

1.  Honda 2000

2.  Yes, I have an A/C

3.  I've never run it all the way through 1 tank of gas continually.  But I can say, on an 11 day trip to Quartzsite, AZ, I ran it a combined 23 hours on 2 tanks of gas.  The tank holds 1.08 gallons.  Usage of course is dependent on the user.  I'm not one to keep my trailer either very cold or very hot.  However, I do enjoy TV for a couple hours in the evening, maybe a golf tournament during the day, use the toaster, coffee pot, charge toys, etc.

4.  No problems with it over heating.

Generator

I've seen Joy's generator mod and it's all she says and more. Joy does excellent mods to her lil 13, and she comes up with great ideas on how to put things together.

Yes it has a hinged lid.  A

Yes it has a hinged lid.  A piano hinge inside across the back of the  lid.  If you look at the prior picture you'll see a locking hasp, center top.  That locks the lid closed.  If you look at the side you'll see a locking hasp which locks the box to the tray.  Actually, you can see the hasp in this picture as well.  There is one on either side.  The tray is bolted to the tongue of the trailer.
