carpeting or linoleum?

I have a 13' Scamp ordered, but need to decide whether I want carpet or linoleum.  Anyone have any information about this?  I'm thinking carpet because it would be warmer on my feet.

Linoleum

You probably will get some different answers on this one, but for us the first thing we do on a trailer is vinyl flooring. We camp out West and sandy beach environments where dust, dirt and sand are impossible to manage with carpet. With vinyl flooring a simple quick sweep out and your good to go. Also spills or water infiltration are easier to deal with with vinyl flooring.

Linoleum(2)

My wife talked me into linoleum. Boy, am I glad she did. Lots of stuff get tracked in and carpet gets stained very quickly. We put some rugs down and after one season of camping they need replacement (they did keep our feet warm). Can't imagine what a carpet would look like now. I agree with Greg that clean up is easier with linoleum. But everyone has their own taste and needs to do things their way.

Carpet hides flaws in the floor, which is why it is used so much in spec homes. I heard, but cannot confirm, that Scamp does more work to level and smooth the floor when they put vinyl in, which is why they charge more. The materials cost should be about the same, maybe even a bit more for carpet if it is good quality.  If you get carpet and find a rough floor under it, then you have some extra work to do when you put in a non-carpet flooring.  Even if the subfloor is good to go, it's easier to redo the flooring if it is not carpet.

But is is a cold floor without the carpet.  So my quest for a properly sized carpet throw or runner goes on.

Carpet

We chose carpet for the softer and warmer floor when getting up at night to go to the bathroom or for any other time when we are bare footed.  Carpet is easy to clean with a small 12 volt vacuum cleaner and stains usually clean up easily.  Carpet for Nancy and me!

So your feet are warmer but then you sit in the ice cold toilet seat!  LOL

That was one on the first things I noticed in the middle of the night.. because the bathroom is closed off, it gets no heat, and the seal at the bottom of the holding tank lets cold air in, so its a shocker when you sit down!   Anyone think we can add a heated seat in the bathroom ;)

carpet or not

I know in my motorhomes the non carpeted areas showed less wear and tear.  Has anyone replaced the carpeting?

As for the cold potty.  There was some ditty about that "sitting on the cold, cold pot".  I don't remember it all.  I have a heated steering wheel in my car, as well as heated seats.  Seems like some enterprising soul could patent a heated potty seat - preferably with a remote switch.

No Carpet For Us

Although we don't have a molded fiberglass yet, we have camped for over 30 years and had both.  Carpeting to me is a nightmare.  It is just so much easier and efficient to have an area rug.  I like the hand vacs in the small areas, the ones that plug in are always more powerful and we have a Black and Decker, to just suck the sand/dirt/etc. right out of the little crevices and corners because with carpet, it is just too hard to get it out.  Also, getting "goat heads" caught in the carpet and locating them isn't all that easy and I am surprised how many places in the US have them.

I just always feel the vinyl is easier to clean.  I don't like carpet in the house either but I was brought up in the days of wood floors and area rugs so I may be overly biased.  But, I have been in sticky mud like you wouldn't believe and black/red soil that stains.  I don't  like mud or carpeting.  I should go back to the desert.

Both

When I bought my Scamp 16 new in 2013 I made the decision to get linoleum. I knew it would be easier to clean but I had carpet in my old 5er and liked it. So I went to that high class store called Ollie's and bought a 5' x 7' carpet for $21.00 and carefully cut it to fit and it looks like wall to wall carpet. It does not move around and if I want I can yank it right out I can.

Vinyl or Carpet

When I had a trailer in the past, I was shocked at all the dirt carried in no matter where we camped. We had 2 kids and a dog. I can't imagine cleaning carpeting with all that dirt. It was quick and easy to sweep the vinyl floor a couple times a day. Also a quick mop for all the muddy foot prints. I had a couple scatter rugs plus one in and outside the door. They were easy to shake out and wash in the washing machine at the end of our trip.

Carpeting or linoleum?

We bought an 83 scamp 16 ft this spring that needed some love. It had carpet and of course a bit of a funky smell. One of the best things I did was to rip out the carpet and lay a laminate plank floor. I used a thin reflective foam underlayment that seems to offer the best of both worlds. We also keep an area rug on the floor which can be taken outside and shaken!
