Awning extentions, rain and shade curtains

We are heading out for our first extended trip with our 16ft Scamp. We are heading out to the four corners areas of NM, CO, AZ, UT in July.

We have a 10ft canopy but would like to add  side curtains to block the sun, wind and rain. Is this a good idea or are there other options such as a separate screen room with side curtains. We plan to be outside as much as we can and we are looking for ideas to make the vacation as comfortable as possible.

Awning: good idea!

You are describing a screened outside room!  I have seen some small fiberglass trailers with very nice extensions/attachments such as you describe.  The best were custom-built.  I think it is a good idea; the question is how to execute it.  Personally, I do not know of any "catalog-order" units you can buy (such as you can for more traditional kinds of trailers). I hope other Club members with experience with awning rooms weigh in on your post.

Upcoming Trip

You haven't updated the trailer in your profile so not sure what year trailer you have. If you have the new Fiamma awning Scamp is putting on sometimes the awning manufacturers make a screen room for their particular awning. Not sure if Fiamma currently has one available for that awning, but a call to Scamp would probably be able to tell you.  UPDATE: Fiamma does show a privacy room on their website that is built to work with their awnings. You'd just have to confirm that it is compatible and available with the awnings Scamp uses.

The 4 Corners area (AZ,NM,UT,CO) you are listing visiting in July will have temperatures in excess of 80's to 90+ with surrounding areas of Utah, NM, and AZ in excess of 105+ at that time of year. In addition, that is the monsoon season where the storms can be ferocious with close to hurricane level winds. Last June/July Weather record show considerable storm activity in the area interspersed with nice days which is typical of the monsoon season in the SW. They can hit within a very short time and we never recommend leaving awnings or structures like First Ups unattended or even deployed at that time of year. Not meant to discourage your trip, just be aware of the changing weather in July in the SW. Tons of folks still camp and go at that time and the parks are full, you just have to be aware of how things transpire in the SW in July.

Personally, I would not recommend going to the expense of a screen room for that particular trip. We aren't bothered by bugs in the SW, and just deploying the awning for some time sitting outside is all we usually need to do down here. When it is 105+ if you can just get out of the direct sun it is usually pleasant enough to sit out under an awning, but you don't want to leave an awning deployed overnight or when you leave camp, especially at that time of year and those locations.

Clam Screen shelters

On the east coast a lot of people are using the Clam screen rooms. They hold up great at the windy beaches and are easy to set up and take down. Clam started out with the green Clam 1600 series screen room with add on side panels. They now have an improved product the tan Clam Quick Set Escape. The newer side panels for the Quick Set are made to be more water tight and you can now get side panels with windows. If the wind really gets up you can pop the sides in and throw a strap over it in less than a minute. With the side panels they run in the $250-$400 range a lot cheaper than loosing a $1K awning and possible wind damage to a trailer. I have a green 1600 screen room but would buy a tan model if I were to buy a new one since it would be a bit cooler and some of side panels have windows. It folds up into a bag  for storage not much bigger around than a chair. The only draw back it is the storage bag is six ft. long.

Clam shelter vendor

L&M fleet supply has about the best prices on the Clam products. Free shipping on the shelter but the side panels do not qualify for free shipping due to price. When I bought mine I called L&M and they included the side panels within the tent package and they gave me free shipping on everthing. Nice people to deal with and better prices than Amazon. (Not connected to L&M)

Trim Line screen room

This screen room at 8' looks like exactly what I have been looking for.

http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/10-trim-line-screen-room/17095

The description on the Campingworld web site states that it will only work with a trim line awning. I have ordered a Fiamma F45 awning and am wondering if it would work with that awning , IF Velcro were added to the awning?

Does anyone have experience with this application?

Mark
