I am looking to upgrade my tires on my 2013 16' scamp from 13" to 14". I have seen a lot of different reviews but no real clear cut answers. Here are the questions I have.
- Can I add 14" tires on my scamp without trimming the fiberglass or modifying the axle?
- What is the difference between class C or class D?
Thanks so much!!!
I've been thinking about going to 14 inch wheels and tires on my 16 also. I have read a lot of posts of different forums. I agree that there seems to be no consensus about the feasibility. I guess that is not surprising considering that people load their trailers differently, that the age of the torsion axle, and how it has been cared, for result in differing clearances, and the campers show some variation from the factory.
The starboard side has less clearance, both on top of the tire and the side cutout. The side cutout can be trimmed and its easy enough to calculate the added diameter of a 14 inch tire and measure the clearance in the wheel to see if it fits when the camper is static. But the figuring out the travel of the axle arm, and how far the tire will in turn rise, seem to be black magic, especially when going over rough roads with maybe some extra weight in the camper.
This is of real interest to me. I want to upgrade and find 13 inch tires to be much lesser as in all chinese than available 14 inch tires.. I have never bought any tires other than American since 1970 and would rather not start now. Anybody try the 14" tires? Thanks..
Badge, I don't have to show you any stinking badges!
I cut the body AND put in a lift kit after the picture was taken.
Can you just lift axle by adding blocks between frame and axle ? some times you can just bolt thing together with out welding thing up.
Have Scamp will travel !
E-trailer sells a lift kit (box and bolts) for some Scamps.
At sometime in 2010 scamp started using the bolt on axle brackets. On earlier trailers the axles are welded on. If you replace a welded on axle you can add bolt on brackets at that time.

No one has recommended a tire size. I have a nice set of 14" wheels that I'd like to use. Anyone have a recommended 14" tire size? I too would like a USA tire.
I found tiresize.com to be a useful reference for tire sizes. You'll find a wealth of data on height, width, et al. I kept my 13" but went up one size and changed from C to D loading. Seems to fit well now, but I think I'll need to enlarge the wheel well as time takes its toll on the axle etc. C rated has less loading capacity than D and the higher rating can in theory raise your trailer capacity. I wasn't trying for that, but I felt that the original C rated tires were just too light for my 2800 lb trailer. While it's still not suggested, you can (but shouldn't) run at higher speeds with the D rating.
