14” tires, The rest of the story

My 16’ Scamp now has 14” tires! There were some modifications involved on mine. It is a 2017, so the axle is still good, but the new Goodyear (made in the USA) 205/75 R14 tires were almost hitting on the curb side.

The wheel wells on the two sides are not the same, so the first thing I did was trace a pattern of the street side and cut the curb side to match. It was still close, so I then added a 3.5” lift kit from Etrailer. After mounting the lift kit, I checked the alignment with a tape measure from the center of the jack, to the same location on both sides of the axle. There was a brace from the axle to the floor (to prevent floor bounce) that needed to be cut, I have yet to weld in an extension, but that will be easy to do.

With the taller tires it was about 4.5” higher but flipping the hitch to rise instead of drop put me in the ballpark. Thankfully I have the Scamp step.

I took it for a test drive both off road and on the highway and all is well so far, and I no longer have 60 MPH “China bomb” tires. The new tires are rated N, 87 MPH and 2040 lbs. each.  (Direct from a mid-west distributor, the tires were one year old, they also needed a LOT of weight, but they are ROUND.)

I did this instead of welding the brace from axle to the floor

I used and bolted on cut angle iron

Good post

Upgrading the tires is always a good idea, this takes it to the next level.  I wanted to comment on the great coordinating  graphics on both your TV and the Scamp--I love them!

Scamp graphics

Thanks, it went very well. I told the shop that I wanted to tie the tow vehicle and Scamp together to let people know they were a set. He took pictures of both, sent me three sample designs, I asked to combine two of them and he made it work. It is now part of his sample book. Pin striping my car is next.  I think there are many truck lettering and sign shops that do this work, but I was lucky to find a very good one close to home.
