13ft vs 16ft towing

I have heard from other members that they tow a 16ft Scamp with thier Ford Escape.  I have a 2011 Ford Escape with a max towing capacity of 3,500.

Most tell me not to go over the 13ft in weight.

The car has a towing  package where it has a shared transmission cooler with the airconditioner.

Anyone else towing a 16ft Scamp in the mountains with a Ford Escape 6 cyl.factory towing package?

Towing with a Ford Escape

We have a 2012 Ford Escape, the last year Ford put them in Escapes. Want a 6 cylinder now, must select a

Ford Edge. Our Scamp tows very well, a 16 ft. Scamp.  We did install a transmission cooler. No worries if you have a 6 cylinder.

Engine Size, etc. Matter

When I was looking for a used vehicle, I learned quickly when looking at tow capacity that just because it was the same on the outside, there were variations on the inside that could make something not tow as well as another.  I really liked the Flex and with the right engine, etc. it could adequately tow but all the used ones in town were rated to not safely tow.  I ran into the same thing with minivans so it really pays to look beyond just the manufacturer's line at the "nuts and bolts" under the body.

We have also learned that the Ford Van E-350 Club Wagon rated at 5,500 towing capacity does a much finer job of towing our pop-up than does the Durango with, I think it is 6,600 towing capacity.  The upside is that the Durange is much easier to get around in when detached from the trailer.  The Durango does well but it isn't the Club Wagon.  Both are V-8 and gas hogs of course but we don't travel that much and work is close.

Towing

With our 6 cyl Ford Eacape, we get 18 plus mpg, and it tows soundly. We did add a transmission cooler, smart move. 6 cyl engines today are what 8 cyl engines used to be.

Towing with 2011 - 2012 Ford Escape

I have towed my 13ft Scamp all over the west and midwest.   Overall it has done a good job but it hasnt been without problems.

The Escape has a 3,500 towing capacity (the key word here is Capacity).   2,000 would be my maximum and it works best when I keep in around 1,200 - 1,700.   The escape has a 3.0 varible timing engine.  Each cam has a sensor that keeps track of the load on the engine and adjusts the timing accordingly.  When you are climbing mountains in Montana, Colorado, Washington, Idaho and Utah it puts alot o strain on the engine and the sensors wack out on occassion.   My service engine light would come on and I would have to reset it and it would run fine after a few minutes to rest the timing.    I replaced the right and left sensor and the crank sensor and all is good as of now.    Ford told me I needed to replace all kinds of ($4,000) things.

I knew exactly what is going on with this engine and the stress from towing.    Sure you can pull something, but that is different than towing it 1,000's of miles.   So with that said be cascious in how much weight you load up in your vehicle and the scamp keeping it to a minium and you will have fun going anywhere you want.   Dont ever tow to capacity.
