New at Using a Sewer Hose

Our new 16 Deluxe will be ready for pickup in May. I elected to keep the plastic sewer hose (tube) holder on the front of the trailer. I understand it limits the length of hose that it can hold and the trailer only comes equipped with a 10-foot hose.

So my questions:

- Can the carrier hold a 15 foot sewer hose? If so what brand has worked for others if any

- Besides the hose, regardless of length, what fittings will I need to purchase to make the hose work when it comes time to do the work? (i.e. 90 degree elbow, supports, etc.)

My plan is to carry a plastic tub with gloves, cleaner and perhaps a short water hose to wash up afterwards

All this seemed simple until I began looking at all the connections and accessories on the internet :)

Sewer Hose Accessories

The first thing you want to have for working with your Sewer Hose is disposable gloves.

The next thing you need is a high quality Sewer Hose, I like the Viper from Valtera. It is tough and it comes with a detachable 90 degree elbow that fits into the sewer pipes at most dump stations.

Here is a link:  "Viper" sewer hose kit in 15 (they also have a 20 ft kit) :

A high quality Sewer hose makes the job much, much easier (and cleaner).

I also recommend a clear, 45 degree elbow to attach at the trailer end of the hose. This allows you to monitor that every thing is flowing properly and facilitates the flushing out of your tanks.

Sewer hose

We have had out Scamp 13 for a year now and have yet to use the bathroom due to uncertainty of emptying the black water tank.  Everyone seems to think you need a longer hose and extra connections.  Our question is where do people store the longer hoses (if you don't want to add a holder underneath) and the elbow connectors?  Any videos would be helpful for those new to Scamping.

Dumping tanks

It is very easy to dump tanks on most any RV. You just need to dig in and start using the Scamp bath and enjoy having it. Here is a pretty thorough walk through on dumping tanks: https://www.sanidumps.com/howtoemptyyourtanks.php

I go to Wally or Home Depot and get whatever size inexpensive Rubbermaid buckets with lids. One is my setup bucket for water hose, power cord, stabilizer gear, etc. I get a second one for only sewer hoses equipment, gloves, etc. The bed of my pickup is multiple Rubbermaid tubs each with its own purpose.

You will need more than a 10 foot hose and it can go in the sewer bucket. The dump walk through above will show you the other things you will want to have.

Hope this gets you started enjoying your onboard facilities.

dumping tanks

Greg, thank you for your comments and reference:https://www.sanidumps.com/howtoemptyyourtanks.php.

I have 2 very naive question regarding camp site full hook ups? In the article referenced above it states that one would not want to empty the black water tank until it is approx 2/3 full. First, how does one know how full your waste water tanks are in say a 13' Scamp. Secondly , why hook up your sewer hose at the site, if you shouldn't empty it until your tank is 2/3 full?

I have read about monitors used on large RVs that can tell you the status of all your tanks, I have not read however about those being used on smaller Scamp units.

I am sure many of these questions will be answered after I take delivery, but my mind is trying to figure it all out ahead of time.

Thanks, Mark

P.S. Greg I see your comment of 12/13/16 regarding emptying at the site, thanks.

Using "Full" Hookups

Whenever you are at a site with "Full" Hookups (full hookups include Sewer Connection), you don't want to simply leave your dump valves open and let your waste (both black and grey) simply "trickle" down your Sewer Hose and into the drain.

Here is why this doesn't work; the bottom of your tanks are flat and "stuff" gets stuck to the bottom of your tanks and things do not flow out (especially solids [food or otherwise]). If you keep your tank valves closed and only dump when your tanks are 2/3 full you will have enough liquid inside your tanks to flush out the solids which have settled on the bottom. If you keep your dump valves open, the solids (including food particles) get stuck to the bottom of your tanks because they dry out.

Additionally, (I'm talking to the Men especially) Do Not water the plants and trees around your campsite thinking you are saving capacity in your tanks. The Black Tank needs a large quantity of liquid in order to move the accumulated solids down the Sewer Hose.

When camping with "Full" Hookups it is easy to leave the Sewer Hose connected to the Sewer Pipe and simply drain your tanks every few days by opening the Dump Valves (Black first, then Grey) whenever your tanks reach the 2/3 level.

PS: You want to add your treatment chemicals every time after you dump your tanks (both Black and Grey).

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!

Tanks full

Hey Mark,

Van Man is right on with the answer to full-time hookups, and now I know why guys are always hanging around the trees. laugh

Bigger rigs have tank gauges, but Scamps do not. Most of the gauges in the bigger rigs aren't accurate so they end up doing it the manual way anyhow. With the black tank you will be able to see the level when you flush. You'll develop a very good sense of where the tank level is with experience. Grey tank will back up in the shower drain or sink if over full, you should be able to look at the Grey level underneath as it's opaque.

After some experience, you'll just know how many days you can go on your tanks and not really even have to monitor them. I know the days I can be out by myself, with spouse, spouse and kids.

Experience is a great teacher

Greg, thanks.

I bet there are many NEW Scamp owners or potential owners. Many of us are newly retired and have never slept on a bed while camping. I bet many of us have spent years in a tent, sleeping on the air mattress. Too bad we got old, and now want / need the comfort of  a bed. By golly, we will get that experience soon, but right now it is great that there are those more experienced who are here to share their knowledge with us.

Thanks again for all the generous help on these forums !

Mark
