July Lake Superior Circle Tour

We took most of July doing a bucket list trip around Lake Superior through Canada, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Wonderful scenery - for example, Aguasabon Falls near Terrace Bay below.  More trip pictures at http://jrpalm.imgur.com/

Lake Superior loop

Great pictures. I had planned to make the loop trip in June but had to cancel. When traveling in Canada how do you deal with the money issues. Exchange money before you leave  or exchange it near the border. Are credit cards a problem?

Thanks Eddie

Money issues in Canada

Eddie - We didn't have any credit card issues in Canada but we let our card companies know before we left on the trip where we would be traveling, because we did on another trip (not in Canada) have a card declined when a card company detected spending out of our usual location and we had to resolve the problem by phone.  In the US in some off-the-beaten track areas we have had problems with merchant chip card readers accepting a card with a chip.

Usually we change a chunk of US $ for Canadian at the point where we cross the border.  Currently the exchange rate is very favorable for US travelers, but the prices in Canada for food, gas etc will eat away at the favorable rate.  On the trip to the north shore we took this July, we were paying around  $4.40/US gallon for gas for example.

Regardless, the Lake Superior shore is gorgeous and well worth a trip.

Money in Canada

Major credit cards accepted almost everywhere. ATMs readily deliver cash that's automatically adjusted to the current exchange rate at your bank. In general, an ATM is the best way to obtain local currency wherever you travel.

As already stated, exchange

As already stated, exchange some money at the boarder for the current exchange rate. If you do not do that, you are at the mercy of the individual merchants you buy from. Many close to the boarder will give you some exchange rate, but they do not keep up with the "Official", almost always less - not their job to be an international bank. Just be sure to change it back when you return to the US, or you will be stuck with the Canadian - most businesses in the US will not accept it any more. Will have to find an international Bank to exchange it and many have restrictions on how much and what form they will accept. Edit: perhaps the ATM is the way to go, never tried that, still need to exchange back to US when you return, or you will be stuck with it.

Also, some credit cards will charge an international exchange fee beyond the Official exchange rate, check with your credit card company. And finally, check you cell phone coverage, some will not work, or will charge exorbitant international calling charges.

A trip to Canada is WELL WORTH the small hassles involved.
