Comfy mattress needed!

I'm caught between a rock and a hard place in trying to make up a comfortable bed in my 13' Scamp. Right now I have so many layers of mattress pads, foam eggshell pads, etc, that the bed is a nightmare to fix and take apart. Compound that with the fact that I very cleverly created a "living room" by taking out the factory table and substituting three boards to stack for U-shaped seating or spread out for the bed. I expend some much energy making up the bed and dismantling the next morning that it's hardly worth it.

My question is how flexible and workable are memory foam or similar mattresses? Can the full size memory foam be cut to conform to the rounded corners of the Scamp? Could I roll it up every morning so I can enjoy my tiny living room for the day? If I leave the bed made all day, 44" of walking around space gets pretty claustrophobic.

Thanks for any ideas that you can give me.

Bed Dilemna

Marilyn,

This is the dilemma in the smaller trailers. After years in our 13, we concluded that we really needed a permanent bed and a permanent table area. I don't recall ur situation or layout, but it can be accomplished in a 13 if a single or a couple if you have the bunks in front which can be converted to a dinette and the rear converted to a permanent bed. If you have to break the rear bed down and create a table all the time it is very difficult to get a really comfortable bed that can be stored while the table is up. We put a bag awning on and our living room was always outside. We always cooked outside too and eliminated the inside stove for larger counter space when we did the kitchen remodel.

When we did put in a permanent bed we went with this http://www.walmart.com/ip/Spa-Sensations-8-Memory-Foam-Mattress-Multiple.... Putting this mattress in and getting rid of the cushions sleeps better than at home.

These are cut to fit very easily with an electric knife.

My back thanks you!

Thanks, Greg. Hindsight being 20-20, I wish now that I had gotten a 16' with side dinette and bitten the bullet to upsize my tow vehicle. I have the very necessary front bathroom on my 13' so will just have to work with what I've got unless you've got a line on a good used 16' for me.

Ah

Marilyn,

Two foot-itis as we call it, or in this case three foot-itis.  wink

Scamp inventory is pretty slow right now being in the heart of the off season, but it will be heating up here in about two months so hang on. As we Scamp and use the trailers more and more we discover the type of trailer that fits our needs the best. Sometimes it takes jumping in and getting going and then discovering what fits our needs best. We recently feel we have finally arrived at the trailer that will accomodate our needs and wants in the next 10 years, but it took 5 trailers and 10 years of camping to arrive at that, none of which I'd have passed up. smiley

Greg:

I've seen you suggest the 8" several times, but while shopping we noticed the 12". Would that be too big for the bed area in 19' Scamp?

We really want to be comfortable.

Thanks,

Keith

Keith,

I have some friends that put the 12" in a 32' Stickie and loved it so much they bought one to replace their mattress at home. I think 12 would be too tall for the 16 and 13, but it might be ok in the 19. My only concern is opening it outside the trailer to cut it with the cushion template and electric knife then getting it up there. The 12 might be a bit unwieldy to get into the loft once it had expanded. I would take tape measure and some painters tape and go up in the loft and measure it and mark it around with the painters tape at spots then just take a hard look at it. If it looks like it would work for you I'd go for it. Great mattress and the 8 or the 12 would be great. I think the big advantage in the 19 with this type of mattress would be eliminating that seam because there are two cushions up there with a seam in the middle.

Keep us posted on what you decide to do.

mattress

We took a look over the weekend and 8" should be good. 12" would just be too thick for the room up there.

It looks like a full size mattress will just need the corners cut back a bit to fit. Is that consistent with what other have done?

We are also looking at building a removable section to go on top of the top bunk so that we can sleep long ways instead of cross ways. Has anyone else done that in a 19?

Thanks!

Probably, but we just removed

Probably, but we just removed the original cushions and it works great. It was so nice that I just ordered a Spa Sensations 12 inch for our home mattress.

Also, we ended up buying a California King and placed it in lengthwise, cutting off the extra length and fitting the top into the curves. With the cut off section we created a cushion that goes on top of the top bunk when it is up so the we can sleep lengthwise. When we want to use the couch we just fold the extra section up and drop the top bunk.

We've only been camping once, but it works pretty well.

Scamp bedding

With our 16, we have a memory foam mattress pad, and it was cut to size by the previous owner. We keep the bed made routinely living in the Scamp. It provides a comfy seating area, feet out front for watching TV in the evening or during a rainy day. Bottom line, a 16 offers much more in the line of space and living comfort. We chose a 16 precisely for this reason.

Bunk size diff in 19'

Because we came from a Casita we knew all about hard bed cushions and after a few tries with different materials my wife got the upper bunk of the new 19 pretty comfy. But I couldn't understand why I could stretch out on the lower bed and the new, soft upper bed had my feet poking thru the window screen. Tape measure says 77" interior window to window in the dinette but 70 1/2" for the same on the top. The upper bunk is cramped but soft and we'll figure out how to re-cushion ($) the lower. That window screen is a gonner, though. Cheesh
