undercoating?

Ellen and I picked up our new 13' Scamp on Tuesday. A day we'd been looking forward to for years.   We live in Minnesota and do not plan on being fairweather campers. So, I would appreciate some feedback on undercoating. What do people think pro and con. thanks

Under coating

Scamp wood floor rot from the top down mostly from leaks. The wood on the bottom of the trailer should be already be coated with resin from the factory. In the past Scamp has spared little expense on frame paint. The just make it black. When you have little else to do and want to ruin some clothes I would repaint your frame.  Do not park your Scamp and let grass grow up around it. It is best to park it on concrete or gravel so you have good air flow under the trailer.

Back to the orig question. Just my opinion. Escapes offer spray foam under trailers as an option. I kind of like to be able to inspect things and check for frame cracks and floor issues. Foam and undercoating could also complicate repairs. YMMV.

Winter camping?

if you are talking about winter camping, remember that some of your water system is outside under the floor.

Undercoating

I picked up a "New-To-Us" 2018 Scamp 16" last summer.   I was somewhat concerned that the metal frame was covered with a good deal of surface rust and scale ling.  After talking with quite a few people who were  knowledgeable about things like this, I selected a product called POR 15.  This is an amazing product that does not  require you to sand or grind down to bear metal before applying.  When used with the degreaser and oxidizing washes as supplied in the kit, it will completely seal the metal work.   I used a wire brush aided by my palm sander with 60 grit paper to clean the rust off then apply the 3 step process.  A couple hints.  A little bit goes a long way.  I bought a quart and plenty left over.   Second, be sure to wear long pants, long sleeve shirt, vinyl gloves, and protective head gear!  If you get this stuff on your skin it will be with you for the next six month!  I does not come off easily!     I was more than pleased at the end results.  It seal all the metal with an extremely hard protective coat that is both rust and chip resistant - perfect for a frame that is exposed to road debris, rocks, sand etc.    I Would recommend this product to anybody.   I bought the kit, POR 15, degreaser, and oxidizing agent online at Walmart.com.   It is well worth the effort to protect your investment.    POR - 15 Link to Walmart.com
