Roadside Assistance Plans

We'll be picking up our new-to-us 2002 Scamp and 2004 Ford Ranger next week and can't wait!!!

I've got my pre-departure checklist ready and will give everything a good going-over before we leave.  However, one item I don't want to overlook is a good Roadside Assistance plan.

Does anyone have any recommendation on a good RV Roadside Assistance Plan?  Are they all about the same cost?  We just joined Good Sam, but I haven't signed up for the Roadside Assistance Plan yet, hoping to find a better bargain?

Any suggestions out there?  Which plan do you use?  Do you have a plan with your vehicle insurance and just use it, or do you have a dedicated RV Roadside Assistance Plan?

Thanks,

piperjim

Roadside assistance plan

I agree totally with Alan above.  We had both (AAA) for automobile only and we would have had to pay extra to have our Scamp towed if the Tow Vehicle needed towing such as happened on our Alaska Trip.  (AAA) will tow your tow vehicle up to 200 miles if needed to satisfy you and bring you to a dealer you select or your home if in that range. They will charge you $4.00 per mile if they have to tow your trailer and you do not have the (Premium RV coverage) which is real, real cheap and what I wished we had on our trip.

Now, if you have (AAA) insurance, and you take out the extra (Premium Coverage) which is about $30.00 extra per YEAR mind you.  They will also tow your trailer and tow vehicle both if needed but only up to 100 miles which again is pretty good to find a reputable place to find for repairs and have both your vehicles towed at the same time.  Actually a lot of these tow companies can sometimes give recommendations to those that will do you justice on your repairs and not let you get ripped off like can happen on the road.

We had to get towed twice while on our Alaskan "bucket list" trip!!  Once for a break down on the trailer, (bearing failed nearly causing us to have a fire).  We had (Good Sam) and they would only authorize our Scamp Trailer to be towed to an authorized dealer of their choosing to the nearest town!!  They will tow you to a repair station of your choosing if it is within the travel mileage of the Authroized repair station.   If you have to go further in mileage, again it is $4.00 mile.  Our driver helped us out and brought us to a reputable garage that we were real happy with the cost of repairs and got on the road one day later. Of coarse at this break down we did not have to have the tow vehicle towed anyhow, we just followed the tow truck with our Scamp on it to the garage.  We had to use Good Sam for this breakdown but no longer with (AAA) which I highly recommend.

(Good Sam Club) authorized this towing to nearest repair station of the Scamp Only.

The second time we broke down was 108 miles from our house after traveling 12,400 miles, our Jeep cherokee's Harmonic Balancer failed and we again had to be towed for repairs.  We had to use (Good Sam) as they would authorize towing the Scamp Trailer and tow vehicle as well to the (Nearest Repair Facility) only.  If we had (AAA) we could have been towed all the way home and paid $32 more only to have both our vehicles in our yard and fixed them at our leisure.

Both Vehicles being towed, good sam covered this but only to nearest repair facility.

We no longer have (Good Sam) as it is too restrictive in travel for repairs and we have used (AAA) several times in the past couple of years that cost way more than the actual premiums we had to pay to have this insurance so for $30.00 more we are completely covered on both vehicles for our traveling.

Sorry for the long explanation, you must know me by now by being thoroug and very long on explanations.

Towing Insurance

Right you are Gray! The insurance from AAA is called RV Plus, and it is well worth it! We will always carry it now that we are towing our beloved Scamp.

Thanks!

GaryLee:

Looks like you guys had quite the adventure in Alaska!!!  Thanks for the info on AAA, and to Doug as well.  Looks like AAA offers a full package.

I was once in the boonies on my motorcycle and Progressive came through for me at that time, but it took a little while for them to arrange to get the right vehicle to haul the motorcycle.  I was 90 miles from the nearest authorized motorcycle shop, so that tow cost them dearly.

Thanks again,

piperjim
