Help! Is the used 16ft Scamp Deluxe trailer I want to buy priced fairly

We are looking at a 2012 16ft Deluxe Scamp with the deluxe wood option package. Floor plan is with the side dinette. He took delivery in Sept 2012.

The base price was $17,395 plus $3,336 in upgrades and options for a total of $20,781. There are very few options that it does not have. It is in excellent condition.

They are asking $17,000 for the unit. They are not motivated sellers so they are firm on their price. This will be our first trailer and we want to pay a fair price. This is the first Scamp we have looked at. The owner was refered to us from the Scamp sales office so we could see what a deluxe unit looked like.

In our conversation they mentioned that they were considering on selling and upgrading to a larger unit that could better serve as an office on the road.

We made the old cliche' of "Don't look at the "Cadilac version first". We don't want to be so starry eyed that we make a mistake.

16 ft Deluxe

We bought a 2002   16 ft Deluxe with everything but an awning and a power vent fan. It had only been used 2 times and was stored inside for 10 years. We paid 11,000 for it and traveled 200 miles to pick it up. I was thinking I got screwed. But after seeing what these Scamps go for.  I got a good deal. It also came with new tires and wheels plus a power front jack and new battery. The used deluxe models are hard to find. I was looking for a standard model but this one came up for sale. Now I’m glad we got the deluxe instead of the standard model . I love all the oak wood. I’m 71 years old this is going to be my last RV

Your new Scamp

I think you got a very good deal, and YES, deluxe models are extremely hard to find. Our 2008 we bought last August was a base model interior, but with almost every option available at the time! We too paid $11,000.00 and felt we got a great deal too. Seller drove almost 300 miles closer for us to pick it up. Now ours is pickled away for the long dreadful and very cold winter!

Scamp Pricing

Is $17,000 a fair price for a 2 year old, used, Scamp which originally cost $20,700?

I would look at this question differently.

I would ask myself if I was willing to pay $3,700 more to buy a brand new Scamp with the options I Chose?

Since you live in MN, and your Scamping season is basically closed for the Winter, you would be paying $17,000 for a 3 year old Scamp before you could effectively use it.

You also do not live too far from the Scamp Hatchery, and you could order a Brand Spanking New Scamp for delivery in the Spring with the options you choose. Plus, you get a full factory warranty!

Additionally, you need to consider your own resale value, you are effectively buying a 3 year old Scamp and you would be selling a Scamp which is 3 years older than if you were to buy a new Scamp from the Hatchery.

Happy Scamping !!!

PS: Along about February or March this guy's "Firm" price may soften a bit as he looks at buying his new TT with a "Bigger" office space.

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!

Wish it were , spring.

I agree with "Man With A Van"

I agree with "Man With A Van".  The only time a buy like this really makes sense is when you can't or don't want to wait for one from the factory.  The warranty on appliances and other systems will no longer be valid and if your frig, A/C, furnace, water heater, etc. have an issue, it will be your expense to handle.  Those sort of costs can add up very quickly and some people do not adequately care for the RV systems.  I would take all of that in the consideration of the price.  To me, options add very little to what I will pay for used and generally the options are more than I would have needed or paid for in the first place.  I would at least give it time before making a decision.

We paid $8100 + tax for a 2 year old 16ft 2005 Scamp with side dinette and front shower and toilet. The previous owners wife thought it would be like staying in a hotel and was disapointed smiley. By the way camping in Minnesota is not over, we are going out next weekend.

Purchase price plus modification? $ ?

I was so excited to finally find an affordable used 1998 13' Scamp with a bathroom that I missed some key missing amenities - such as a fridge (has an ice box) and water heater. But I do have a working doorbell (?) and a keyed outside water cap. The original owner also had the grey water run into the black water tank. Evidentally first owner stayed in civilized campgrounds vs my lifestyle of primitive camping. I paid $6,150 for the camper, almost imaculate condition, no pets, no smoking, great shape. The seller didn't mislead me, I just didn't ask the questions until we started examining it closely when we got it home.

Here's the dilemma - If I can't find a good used fridge, the Scamp factory told me it would cost almost $1,000 for them to install one. I haven't even asked about the water heater and missing grey water tank. Is it logical to rebuild a camper or should I just try to sell and start over? I've love reading about the modifications and changes that you guys make to your campers but I had hoped to keep mine in the decorating category.

Solid Scamp

Sounds like you found a real solid used 13 and that is the most important thing. I wouldn't let the fridge thing throw you. You can get a brand new fridge around $500 and the install certainly can be done yourself if ur handy. Hardest part is cutting the holes for the venting and access. My current Scamp 13 has the icebox and though I'd prefer the fridge I've been out for a week and used the 10lb block ice and seemed to work well. I'd get by with the icebox until it was convenient and found a good deal on the fridge. I'd recommend if u can buy new as the older fridges sometimes can have some head scratching issues. I ended up removing my fridge in my first 13 and standing it on its head for a month before it would start working. surprise

Never had a bathroom with a 13 so maybe someone who does can answer those questions.
