LED Side Marker Lights

Scamp lighting leaves a lot to be desired and just replaced the original side marker lights you could hardly see with LED on my 19. Major improvement.

I purchased these and very happy with them:

First I drilled a new center hole for the wiring as the small holes Scamp had for the wires didn't work with the new lights.

Next wired a test light after cleaning up and stripping the two wires. (Green is tail light wire to red on the new light. White is ground to black on the new light)

No issues or anything special outside of the new center hole and they are now very visible.

Not sure what Scamp is now using for running lights, but if you have the old one's this is a must do project. Cost approx $16, labor approx 2 hours.

LED Light bars

The tail and brake lights on the rear of the 19 are pretty weak as well, I may look at adding some kind of LED light bar eventually.

LED Lights vs Bulbs

I recently changed out the old filament bulbs on my 2017 Scamp 16' with LED bulbs.  Took about 5 minutes to change all four side markets and they are easily twice as bright as before.  Also changed the brake and tail light bulbs to LED and they are brighter, but maybe not as bright as the markers.  Took a little longer too as I didn't want to break the "lense" while trying to remove them.  Almost worked too, but I had to superglue one of them; by the way I have four on the rear end and may still add a fifth when I build a small empty water container box for the hitch.  Anyway another way to go after the LED's.

One of the biggest and overlooked issues with LED replacements is one needs to match the color of the lens with the color of the LED. White led's will work but very poorly. and off color and dimly. red-red, yellow-yellow only and so on. and price is not a good way.to choose.  you will get what you pay for many times. And design of the LED is critical to work correctly with the ridges and internal grooves of the lens. Sometimes you need to experiment with different design/shape to get best result. White standard Incandescent bulbs shine pretty equally every direction and LED's are very directional so something that shines up and down will not illuminate the lens well/brightly. The results can be awesome but it takes some care and experimenting to get the best

LED

Good point on LED marker and tail lights. Yes the LED's for those purposes do need to be the correct color to work properly. If you'll notice in my original post this is why I showed the rear marker lit without the lense so you can see the red LED's. The front markers have amber LED's.

Normally, if you buy quality marker and tail light assembly's and not just the bulbs you will usually find this is done correctly. If not, send them back.

More LED comments

First of all, LED lights will not fix wiring problems. Get the incandescent lamps working at full voltage before the change.

Next; Do not buy replacement lights from Harbor Freight, most truck stops sell a better light.

And to save some money, change only the lamp if your socket and lenses are good. Order red for the red locations and amber for the amber locations or they will look “beached out”.

I just threw some decent 194

I just threw some decent 194 led bulbs in the original housings and they have been working great for the past 2 years and are much brighter.

Side Markers

Greg I ordered the lights you used, thanks for the link. I popped the lens of the one that is on there now and I see I'll have to drill out the pop rivets they used to install them. I'm planing to change the tail lights too. I have the Bargman #94 as most others have. I think I found the reason that it is so hard to take the lens off. I was looking closely as to figure out what I need to do to replace it and how to deal with the screw locations when I noticed the back of the fixture is flat. And because the body of the trailer has a slight radius to it, it forces tension on the tab that fastens the lens to the base. It makes is so difficult to remove that it can cause either the tab to break or the lens.

I mention this after reading what Ramrod said. If you give a shot of WD-40 on the outboard tab, lightly press with your knee on that end of the lens as you press in the tab it comes off OK.
