Hi everyone,
We just picked up our new Scamp 16 in Backus on Monday and camped all the way home. We love it, but getting to the last campground we had a door mishap. We went over a dirt/gravel road very slowly, but apparently it was bumpy enough to spring the bathroom door latch and the door banged itself off its hinges! Ever so fortunately we had a rolled up outdoor rug on the floor and the door landed on it and the sofa doing no damage to door, floor or anything else. Whew. We know we had it latched because we have our checklist and make sure everything is closed, fridge locked, stuff put away etc. The road was not impressively rough, not rutted either. We are extremely conservative on dirt roads and go slowly. At any rate, the screws all pulled out from the frame, not even damaging the frame.
We called Scamp and found that the screws are 3/4 inch wood screws. Kent Evland said this used to happen to old scamps, but first he heard on a new one. We were in Western Nebraska and not wanting to drive all the way back to Backus for a fix. The local shop is up to its ears in hail damage repairs, so we may do the re-hanging ourselves. My question: has anyone used wood glue, gorilla glue or any like thing to put in the screw holes? Kent said we could go up to 1" screws, but I don't want to have this happen again!
Also on a related topic, suggestions for some way to strap the silverware drawer and the door? This baby is less than a week old so we are mindful of making any big changes. The silverware drawer was the only one that opened on the trip, all other cabinets stayed shut.
Other than these we are very happy, pulls great and backing is very slowly improving. Thank goodness for patient people in the campground who waited for us to get in.
thanks a bunch for advice from those with more than our 6 days of experience.
Kent is right, quite common on the older Scamps.
Congratulations on hatching your new egg!
I'd go the full 1" if he says it will accomodate it. I used to shoot the hole full of wood glue and add some on the threads before screwing it back in. Seemed to work, as I never had one come off again after doing that.
Go enjoy and report in on your Scamping about.

Greg thanks a million! We just did the wood glue method of putting the screws back into the door facing. I think its a winner. Now I need to find a way to put a strap or fastener on that will keep the door from unlatching and repeating this event.
Any advice on that? I want to do something before the next camping event--coming soon.
Best,
Catherine

I think you will find that the silverware drawer latch can be adjusted upward slightly. Doing that will help hold the drawer closed while traveling. It is the same latch that is used on the cabinet doors. They also may need adjusting.
Enjoy your new egg!
