Winter Skirting for 16' Scamp

I didn't find this topic in the index. I had an idea to use Automobile Heavy Duty Sun Shades (trimmed to fit) and 3M Command Heavy Duty Picture Hanging Strips.  This probably doesn't require a lot of explanation, but I'll post photos of what I did and how I did it.

So that's what the finished result looks like.  I tried using those foam boards in the past, but I wanted something I could easily fold up and take with me, and those foam board (bales of straw, etc.) just didn't fit the bill for me, I didn't have the storage space for them.  Below are the component pieces I used:

1. Use the alcohol to clean around the bottom of the Scamp, just above the black border, where you're going to apply the 3M Command Strips (and let that dry).

2. Trim the Auto Sun Shade to the height you want.  I measured about an inch above the black border (to allow for the 3M Command Strips) to the ground.  Of course, shape the Auto Sun Shade for the tires, and cut outs for any support brackets.  Then use metal tape to put a protective border on the cut sides of the Sun Shade. Those pictures below:

3. I only installed one Auto Sun Shade and their 3M Command Hanging Picture Strips at a time, since each had to be custom fit. Apply the 3M Command Hanging Picture Strips at regular intervals to the Scamp, just above the black border. Leave the backing on the 3M Command strip that will be facing the skirting at this time. I spaced the (large) strips probably 10" apart.  I did try the medium Hanging Picture Strips, but they weren't as secure, but were good in tight spots.  Once you have them placed, fit the Auto Sun Shade (new skirting) in place.  Now removed the backing from a few strips at a time, so you can make adjustment before fully committing the skirting to the adhesive strips.  Pictures below:

4. Left over Auto Sun Shade can be used to fill in the gaps, such as under the step, around the sewer lines.  I taped some pieces together to make them bigger. Pics below:

I used 7 of the Automobile Sun Shades to fully skirt my 16' Scamp.

That's pretty much it. Let me know if you have any thoughts and how well this works for you if you try it.

Reflectix, your Scamp is made with it

It also comes by the roll. I use it for window covering as well.

Thanks, I didn't know about that.  Good option.  I do like the finished edge that the Automotive Sun Shades have.

nice

I too have considered such a thing even tho we do not typically winter camp.  How much of an improvement do you think it made?  We have the vinyl flooring and a thick throw rug on our floor and do not see  the floor being cold?  Did you add any heat strips to the dump valve and exposed gray tank or exposed pex tubing.

Yes, it's better!

I also have vinyl flooring and have some small throw rugs. I learned recently from Scamp that they don't put any insulation in the floor.  Even though I keep my Scamp cool, there was enough of a temperature difference that there was condensation on the floor and under the cabinets.  I first became aware of this when I initially got the Scamp and put my dog's bedding directly on the floor and found it got damp.  (He's now on an elevated bed.). I've used a small dehumidifier, but that wasn't enough.

With the skirting the floor is dryer, I don't find the floor condensation issue and the interior of the Scamp feels more comfortable, I'm not feeling the cold air from the floor. I sometimes use a small radiant space heater https://amzn.to/3q88oy6 (SOI paid link) because I don't always like the noise and the forced air of the furnace.  Now I seem to just be able to use the little space heater and be comfortable.  So, the skirting is making a difference.

No, I have not yet used any heat strips or insulated any exposed pipes/tubing.  Next project.

Winter camping

I'm in south Louisiana, not far from Lafayette.  People don't think it gets cold here, but we can get temps down into the 20Fs at night, and recently it's been in the low 30F.  Temps get cold enough to need to turn off the water so pipes don't freeze. We can get snow here too. With wind chill, it helps to have the skirting.
