Scams

I wanted to warn about scams.  I think many are familiar but anyone that has just started looking might not be.  On popular trailers which the Scamp and other fiberglass trailers are, you get a lot of scammers.  Greg lists them on his site but they pop up continually on other websites.  These people have a lot of nerve to because they often take photos in the parking lots of trailers and then attempt with a variety of methods to scam you out of your money or at least get your contact info.  I think Greg has hints and guidance on advertising for a trailer, etc. on the fiberglass 4 sale website which would be very useful.

What I find so offensive is hard luck stories that are a lie.  : (  Keeping in mind that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is a scam helps.  Get familiar with what units usually cost.  NADA may not be a lot of help BUT if the price being asked is below NADA it is for sure a scam.  I have seen some older folks selling at lesser prices just because they want to get it sold but beyond that, too many dishonest people to not be on guard.

For some reason, popular amounts on scams are $2,000 to 3,300 price range.  Now, if it is something older and needing a lot of work, that might be OK but most scammers are using trailers like "2007 and like new"  "hard to find",  you get to know the "drill" after awhile.

scams (or Scamps without the "P")

What she said.

.....^^^^ required reading for buyers.

By the way, I have strung along a lot of these scammers, making them waste their time and spend a little money, only to tell them how stupid they are at the end.  Its a confrontational style I do not recommend but I do like to reduce their profit margin.

Just yesterday I kept a "Windows Technical Support " guy on the line for 20 minutes, acting like I was dong all the things on my computer that he wanted me, while in fact I was cooking dinner.  I'm hoping they put me on their black list and don't call back when they realize that not only will I not give them a plug nickel, I will also stop them from scamming anyone else for at last a few minutes.

I used to have a small collection of fake "certified" bank checks, and the like, sent to me at my work address (which if they took the time to investigate they would have found was a police department field office).

Doubt everything, investigate everyone, don't be a victim.

Tara and Tim,

If you will read through some of the Scam Alerts we've posted over the years you will start to see the patterns that the Scammers use.

Molded Fiberglass Trailer Scams

I'm trying to buy a car for my son and just got the "husband had a heart attack, we'll ship it right to your door, using ebay so everything is good" Scam. wink

Many people also email us if they are suspicious of a trailer that they are looking at to ask if it looks legit. We've been at this for so long now and know almost every one of the Scams that they do out there and we're always glad to help.

Another thing to mention is that you need to be ready to buy and know what you want. When these trailers come up for sale they normally don't last long for resale especially if they are a great price and/or a great trailer. We've had trailers sell at Fiberglass-rv-4sale in under 20 minutes after listing is published. I.E. Right now Escape Trailers, since there are hardly any ever up for resale, sell within 24 to 48 hours.

Step 1 in your search needs to be figuring out exactly which trailer you want and then narrowing the focus to that trailer. When one you like pops up, get after it and be ready to buy. We personally don't recommend putting a deposit. Most sellers are genuinely nice people and will hold for you if you are enroute, Keep constant communications as you're heading there with the seller, because buyers will call them and offer more when they know you are coming to get it.

Buying Guidelines will help to prevent being scammed as well as all the tips given above.

This is a great hobby, with great people so I don't want you to think that this is rampant. It is not, and most of the scams have no actual trailer to sell, but we want to protect our members as much as possible because it breaks my heart when someone gets taken by one of these bad guys. You're learning before you buy, and you will know how to shop and be careful.

scam advice

i sure appreciate all the useful info you all gave on scams.  I saw a few on Craigslist for 2000 and I wondered why they were selling them so cheap. I figured they had been wrecked or flooded. Now I know. That was very helpful. We were out in Death Valley today.   We are looking so forward to being able to do this in a camper.
