I have a 1978 13' Scamp. My son jacked it up and replaced the tires but it appears to sit low. The wheel well covers the top of the tire. What is the standard clearance for this model? How do I know if it needs a new axle. I think the one on there is original to the trailer.

Tire replacements and axle
That is a good question - mine is original and the passenger side sits lower thant the driver's side to th point that my son had a technician check the tires! The tires were fine, and we continued our trip, but there is about an inch lower on one side.
The body is molded lower on the passenger side to allow for the door mounting.
My 1983 13' Scamp trailer also rides lower then I'd expect it to. We have been researching to determine if that is normal or if it needs to be replaced, as of today we are running 50/50 on the keep/replace chart.

My father and I have been looking at what can be done to raise the scamper ride height, the standard set up is a ~22 degree rotation upward on the torsional stub axles, when you order the axles you can ask them to set the torsion axle to the standard degree or the opposite of ~22 degrees which will raise it up. Once the torsion axle is set the degree can't be adjusted from what we've determined so far.
We're still debating on whether we swap out for a new axle with some other form of suspension or change out the torsion axle for ones that will lift the camper up.

I took my '84 to a trailer dealer who sells all types of trailers and services them.( utility trailers, boat trailer ,etc )
They inspected mine ,told me it had been replaced in the past ( not original axle ) and said a new axle would not make the camper sit much higher.
So...my advice is to have it inspected by a trailer dealer
Thanks for the information!

We have owned our 1974 13' SCAMP for 48 years (since 1975). When it was about 25 years old, we were traveling in MN and made a stop at the SCAMP factory. I noted that the new SCAMPs on the lot were sitting higher than ours and asked if they had changed the specs. They said No, examined our trailer, reported that it had simply "settled," and offered to replace the old axle with a new one...the next morning. Over the 20+ years since then, it has "settled" a bit more, but it is not yet as low as yours. I believe your axle needs to be replaced.
Thanks for the feedback. I suspected that.
