Thanks for the warm welcome

I am new to the SOI and am excited to find so much good info.

I recently purchased an early '70's (I think) Scamp 16' side dinette with front bath. It is my first fiberglass camper but not my first restoration.

I have rebuilt a couple of Scotty  trailers from the 70's and some other newer units of various brands. I love working on old campers.

I am not sure of the year since I bought it without a title (I know, I know not the best idea) but I have a plan for that and I know for a fact it is not stolen. The only marks on the toungue are the numbers "1153" stamped near body of trailer on top of frame on the drivers side. According to the Scamp site some units in the s 70's were marked there with 3 or 4 didgit numbers.

The refrigerator works great even though the PO said they never used it in the many years they owned it. It only has 12v and propane settings which is the first one I've ever seen without the 120v.

The water heater needed a new pilot and thermocouple assembly. Water tank and pump worked after flushing the system. It does not have a heater but not something you need in FL. Inverter and power supply system all work also.

It has an a/c unit below the tall closet on the right as you enter the door. I removed it and cleaned out 30+ years of accumulated gunk and it works fine. I'm pretty sure it was installed from the factory as the mounting area and vents were all done with rivets and fiberglass panels.

The outside has been painted green, then mauve and now it is white. I'm pretty sure that whoever painted it used a stiff broom or mop and not a paint brush or spayer cause it is some kind of rough. Looks good from a distance though.

Interior looked fair once we got it cleaned up. All the cushions, doors ect. are still there. Range hood is missing. Also replaced 120 volt access door, battery vent cover ( battery is mounted in a closed container under rear seat next to water heater on driverside).

Now that all is in working order we plan a 3 week 6000 mile trip to see if it's something I want to completely restore or just pass it along.

If we keep it I think I'd like to remove carpet from interior and try to insulate and finish in something a little less coffin like and easier to clean.

That's enough rambling for now. Any input or comments would be appreciated.

Battery Placement in Older Scamp

Congrats on your "Find" and welcome to the Clubhouse !!

You are obviously an experienced Restorer and a pretty "Handy" guy.

Your description of where the Battery is located gives me some concerns about the safety of the "Older" Scamp.

Your battery will be "Off Gasing" right under your bed (vented or not).

If it were me, I would move that battery to the outside before I even considered a 6000 mile trip to anywhere.

Just a suggestion.

Happy Scamping !!!

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!

Yeah, relocating the battery

Yeah, relocating the battery is a priority. With the water tank, water heater and battery all in the back the trailer it's tail heavy so moving it to the toungue would help put a little more weight on the hitch and give it a better center of gravity which will make it pull better.  And it will free up some storage space not to mention making it a whole lot easier to maintain the battery.

Thanks for the suggestion.

What you allow is what will continue.
