Refilling Water Heater after winterizing

We just got our Scamp last fall and after a couple of trips out it was time to put it away.  Had it winterized by an RV dealer since I had never done it before.

Now, its time to get it out and prepped fro the summer season, except I can't get the water heater to fill.  I've watched the DVD video as well as the on-line ones.  I've done what what they've said regarding hooking up city water and/or running it off the fresh water tank.   In any event, I don't seem to be able to get the hot water heater refilled and functioning.

Any suggestions, guidance, advise or help is appreciated. (either on this forum or e-mail me at tima410@yahoo.com)

Refilling Water Heater Idea

Hi Tanderson:  We are fairly new Scamp owners ourselves, but haven't had any problems with the water heater yet.  We just fill up our regular water tank, and turn on the hot water faucet at the sink.  Have you tried that? That's all we've done to fill up the water heater.  Of course, the water heater must be full before lighting the heater pilot!  Here's what the Scamp manual has to say:

Now if you know how to fix water leaks under the sink, let ME know!  Good luck.

WH by-pass

I think the newer Scamps come with a WH by pass set up. It consists of two valves, normal use the valve levers line up with the pipe going to the WH tank. During winterization they point to the short jumper by- pass line. On the older Scamps there is a valve in the line between the cold water line and the input of the WH. In your process you want to un plug and flush the WH tank make sure no pressure is on the tank when you pull the plug.

Water heater by-pass

I asked for a water heater by-pass but, a real water heater by-pass has three valves. My Scamp has only one, in the cold water supply line. To know if your heater is filling open the relief valve on the heater (while cold) water should come out. Then go inside and turn on the faucet water should come out.

Valve

We have a Scamp 16 with a 110v and/or LP Gas water heater under the sink. When we went through our walk-through at the Scamp factory this spring they pointed out a water shut off valve under the sink at the hot water heater. It was intended to shut off the water supply going into the hot water heater to avoid having to use large amounts of antifreeze to just fill the hot water heater. I would guess that valve is in the off position as they would have emptied the hot water heater by taking out the drain plug and then winterized the remaining lines.

Not sure if Scamp does it different on different size trailers but the valve should be easy to locate inside or out.

The owners manual cautions to NEVER run the hot water heater when it is empty.

How do you know that the hot water heater is not filling up?

What gives you the impression that the hot water heater is not filling up?

The pictures below should give you an idea as to how it's set up (that's how it's set up in my 13' camper). PS: I realize not all Scamps are setup this way but this is how I received mine in 2015.

Optional gas/electric heat pump operation

We just picked up are new scamp last month and wanting to sanitized the water system before using or is it really necessary if it's for showering only.  I just want to make sure where the buy pass is located and if it's opened or closed from the factory.   Where is it located and since I'm sanitizing the system is it a good idea to include the water heater.
