Redecorating a Scamp 13

Over the last couple years I've been working on redecorating the inside of my 13, "Freya." My goals were to make the changes cosmetic only, not to change any structural details. With the help of a friend, I made all-new, solid wood cabinet doors, so that they could be rosemaled by an artist I commissioned to do the work. And besides that, I made new curtains, and re-covered all the cushions.

The rosemaling is in the Numedal style (Numedal is a region of Norway). These photos don't show the painting very well; I have others that do, but don't want to cram this post too much. One example:

Curtains are of linen (and they're lined), of a fabric that a friend of mine purchased in Norway and sold to me. I made them about 1.25 times the width of the window, so that they would have some curve to them, but the design wouldn't be hidden. Attachments are by plastic rings sewn into the headers, through which the curtain rods pass. Excess curtain fabric went into making a couple of potholders.

Cushion covering was a *huge* project, and took a good bit of research and some trial-and-error to figure out. Researching here on SOI, I found nothing; so I wrote out an article about my experiences with this, that I'd be happy to share with anyone who wants it. (File link provided in a post below.) Suffice it to say, as a starting place, that you need about 12 yards of 60" wide fabric (more than the 7.5 yards that Scamp told me I needed); and here's a good video to get you started thinking about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-FuavPtwgQ&ab_channel=Sailrite

Number One piece of advice that you won't find on any internet resource, or figure out until you make a mistake and have to rip it all out again, is: Do not stretch either the welting or belting (the side pieces), when applying to the plates (the big top and bottom pieces). If you look at the second photo posted above, you'll see the result of pulling on the belting as it was being attached. I *could* take that cushion cover apart again and fix it. I just haven't gotten around to it. Don't make my mistake!

All in all, I'm happy. The interior of my Scamp is cheerful and bright on a summer's day instead of heavy and dark, as formerly; and sometimes even if we're home, I go out and just hang out in there because it's so pleasant.

Beautiful!

What a nice personalization project for your Scamp. That's a great look.

Very cute!

I especially love the painted doors!  Aren't they fun to redecorate?  I bet you have a big grin on your face every time you open the door now.  You didn't show the floor though...did you get a throw rug to go with the new look?  I don't sew, so I paid someone to do my cushion slipcovers and curtains.  She said it was a challenge, but she enjoyed the project and they turned out great.

Photos?

It would be great if you'd post photos, rriebow. It's inspiring to see what other people have done, and I think is especially nice to see in the present coldest days of winter. :) Please?

My Scamp

I don't want to gum up this thread with my own photos...you can find a few pics of my Scamp interior from my post in early June 2018 (General Discussion) "My 15 minutes of fame".  Or maybe you can sort thru from when I first posted pics of it, I believe in 2016?

Swedish rug

Here's the Swedish plastic rug I use, which is made out of recycled plastic. There are many possible designs and colors. I knew it was just the right thing, when I saw one in the home of a friend - actually, the artist who did the rosemaling. Totally weather proof, can't be stained, quick to dry if you get it wet (as you will). These can be machine washed and last 20+ years in homes; I'm sure it'll last much longer with the light use it gets in Freya. I do think something one likes for the floor is important because it's the first thing you see when you come in. Sorry the photo is on the dark side and a little out of focus. The rug is much brighter and fresher-looking than can be apparent in the dim light available for these night-time pictures.

Swedish rugs can be found online, but are not cheap no matter where you look. In Minnesota, I know Ingebretson's in Minneapolis carries them, and also the Uffda Shop in Red Wing. Both have websites, but may or may not show the Swedish rugs. I ordered mine from somewhere else, but have lost that information. I bet they can be found somewhere in Duluth, too.

I actually started this post to share info about cushion reupholstering, because I couldn't find any info anywhere on scampowners.com, and not so much as a redecorating thing. But thanks for all your approval!

Now if only I could figure out how to install electronic ignition on the stove (I do have the parts) I'd be a cat with cream. For sure though it'll be less work than the upholstery.

Greg reminded me that I *can* post even a lengthy PDF here, so here it is.
