Ready to share

I have been a Scamp owner for almost a year and have gained tremendous insight and guidance from folks on this site.  I would like to share what I have done to my trailer as a result.  My Scamp is a '97 16 ft layout 6.  I am the 4th owner and have all of the original paperwork, manuals, bill of sale, etc.  A week after i bought it i took it on a 2500 mile trip from TN to the far reaches of Michigan's UP. Aside from a tire blowout at mile 150 I had a wonderful trip, and learned much about improvements I wanted.  So, being fortunate enough to have a heated barn and full woodworking shop, I got to work over the winter.  To date, I have:

  • replaced all cabinet doors, bathroom door, and drawers with custom maple doors/drawers.  The original doors made great templates, and I re-used the existing hinges
  • added Imtra LED light fixtures on either side of the head door, under the rear cabinets, and over the sink.  Running the wiring for the aft and over sink lights was lots of fun(not)
  • replaced the mouse-hole shore power mess with a Marinco stainless marine inlet
  • added a Cafremo 12 v fan
  • added a Fiamma 45s 350 awning (there is a great video of an install on a Casita that was super helpful  (https://youtu.be/ip_oLucTt5A)
  • Replaced the side dinette table pedestal  with a telescoping base (https://www.marineteak.co.uk/all-pedestals/telescopic-fixed-table-pedestal-25)
  • replaced all light bulbs with led
  • replaced all tires and wheels with load range D tires
  • replaced the tongue jack with a sidewinder

my tow vehicle is a Land Rover LR4, and I made a custom 2-drawer storage unit for the cargo are so as to put the heavier tools, camp gear, etc, in the vehicle and out of the trailer

Next on the list:

  • Cherry/maple strip table tops and stove burner cover
  • Replace gas valve/pilot assembly on hot water tank so it stays lit
  • custom maple shelving in head (i use the head as a closet (gear, not water :-). )
  • remove 2nd water tank and install Lifeline 6v AGM batteries - ventilated of course
  •  replace current axle with new 14 " wheel axle

I was pricing out a new Oliver or Airstream, and with my purchase price and all upgrades, I will still be at less than a quarter of the cost, for a scamper of comparable capabilities!

I love my Scamp, and I am grateful to all of you who have unknowingly given me great advice!

Ready to share / upgrades

Nice job.

Looks great, especially the cabinets.

Was it hard to install the awning?

Thanks!  I would describe the

Thanks!  I would describe the awning install as moderately difficult. The critical part is getting the bracket locations lined up so that the awning drops on to them. The video was super helpful. Especially the part about using the packaging material as a guide.  What  was a little frustrating was that the scamp brackets, ordered directly from scamp, needed to be cut and drilled to work with the Fiamma brackets. For 50 bucks for a couple pieces of aluminum, I would think scamp could do the cutting and drilling as part of the deal. The other difficult part was cutting through the rat fur and insulation to get the fender washers and nuts installed for the brackets. I suppose you could use rivets from the outside, but that would make me just a bit nervous. Altogether, it took about eight hours to complete. I did all the work single-handedly except for actually putting the awning on the brackets, which is definitely a two person job. I am very happy with the awning on its first trip out

After reading your account, I would be a little nervous undertaking that job.

Impressive:)

It looks great!

The cabinets are beautiful!  We (okay, my husband!) put a mount on our Scamp for a canvas awning.  He was nervous about drilling into the Scamp wall too, especially the rat fur--worried about creating an ugly hole.  What is that stuff made of, Kevlar?  It turned out well though, and no "extra" holes!

Those doors!

Those doors, though! I love that look with the raised borders and the larger ones with the strip of wood down the middle. My partner and I did similar work on some bathroom doors (in our house) that we're really happy with. Enjoy your re-creation!
