Minor Design Flaw

We just picked up our 16 Scamp in March and there is a minor design flaw that might be worth mentioning.  We got dual propane tanks and tank tray is located such that the battery cover cannnot be removed w/o loosening the tanks holder and lifting one tank partially out of the tray.  If the tray was located approx 1/2" further away from the battery this would not be an issue.  There is plenty of room for the tank tray to move that 1/2".  Anyone ordering a Scamp w/ dual tanks might wish to talk to Scamp about this.  It's a simple design change at the factory.

Gas tank tray

The same thing happened with mine when we went to Alaska and wanted to remove the battery cover and could not.  Well as always, I had to re-engineer something that should have been quality checked at the Scamp factory at final inspection.  So mine was not a fluke, must be the same assembler putting this together.  I had to move my tanks and move them forward toward the tongue about 1/2" maybe a little more but not much.  Now I can remove the battery cover easily, tight but removeable.  So this means that the battery box and battery were installed and then the dual gas tanks.  That is another thing I do not believe is really needed, (dual lp tanks).  We went to Alaska and used on full tank of fuel on our whole 72 day trip.  One tank is enough for two adults, two chichuchu's, and two guinea pigs.  That would be that much less weight on the tongue.  We conserve all energy, (Battery, gas and electric) and this helps.

I think Scamp better start checking these posts as more and more minor changes are popping up!  Things that do not cost hardly any money need to be addressed by engineers and quality control, it seems like Scamp is in hell bent on making as pure profit as possible??  That is MY personal Assumption.  A fiat or Chevy (Not sure of the model) cost the same as Scamp, their quality program before releasing a vehicle has to be right on target, what is wrong at Buckus, MN.?

RE design flaw

I just posted a comment on Eveland's Facebook page regarding the battery box. This is not a minor concern for me since I'll  need frequent access to the battery in order to hook up the portable solar panels.

Happy trails,

Portable solar and battery box

Consider adding some Powerwerx connectors to your battery box and panel wiring so you don't have to open and close the battery box?  Out setup has worked quite well.  Some pics here (we're also using a Renogy folding panel).

laugh  Think they'd put it (undocumented design feature) in the next Scamp brochure? Only then it would be 'documented'.

Eons ago, when I worked in the construction business, we called mistakes like this a "structural mutation"

Certain things can be thought

Certain things can be thought out better.  They could plump it better, so pipes are not run across sparse cabinet space, a few elbows and they can run the pipes against the cabinet carcase instead smack in the open space inside cabinet. Also the wire connections can be protected better. After all a new scamp is not cheap, just less exspensive then others brands.  The carpentry could be better also with just a little more effort.  But i still like it.  Carl

Apology to Scamp

I want to apologize to Scamp for the post above made by me which was inappropiate concerning something about Barbados.  I should not have vented like this and again apologize for such immature comment. (I have since edited that comment out but some of you may have seen it already),  BUT, I stand by all coments ever made by me about the hope that anyone having control to make decisions about The Scamp product does read all our post and think of our suggestions and questions.

My desire really is not to have SCAMP known as ONE of the best Camper Trailers but to have Scamp known as THE BEST CAMPER ON THE MARKET TODAY, thanks to input from thousands of previous owners that have been considered.

Re Design flaw

Well, I called Alan at Eveland to request that attention be given to the battery case location since I learned on the forum that some new owners had a problem with access to the battery.  Alan told me that he has not heard any such complaints and that he doesn't check the SOI website.  My query was transferred to Mike in the service department who advised me that he would pass my concern onto the production line. Mike insisted that it is not possible for the battery case to be mounted where it would jam against the dual propane tanks.  All I can say is we'll seefrown

I think Mike from Scamp is missing the point.  The battery case does not in fact contact the propane tank until attempting to remove the top (removable) portion of the battery case.  When the top portion of the battery case is assembled and strapped down there is no contact.  The lower portion of the case has plenty of clearance to the propane tank and is not the issue.
