i posted this under the trailer weight sticky, but maybe this is a better place as a new topic...
My 1978 13 Scamp had the frame replaced. I can find the actual weight by going to a CAT scale, but does anyone know if the GVWR was labeled on the original (the title doesn't have the weight)? I'm trying to get a number for my mechanic.
Trailers are usually rated by the axle load rating. The early S-13's only had 1.2 K axles. The newer S-13's and replacement axles are replaced by 2.0 or 2.2K axles. I would make sure your tires match or exceed your axle rating and use the axle rating figure for the GVWR. The main exception is some cargo trailers are rated at just under 3K but they have 3.5 K axles. This is done because in some states 3K is the start point for requiring brakes and inspections.

Thanks. In the end, the mechanic pretty much did what you said: took the unladen weight, the tire rating, the axle rating, did some math, then subtracted a little so I'd be smart. Unladen was 1120#, he wrote 2000# on the DOT form.

1988 13 Scamp
The earlier Scamps did have thinner metal in their frame than they currently use now. Just like anything mechanical if not maintained ,abused and over stressed the items will more than likely fail. You should always check the frame for cracks and weak spots when inspecting to buy. I have owned quite a few Scamps of all ages and none have had frame issues. Keep in mind, people posting to these types of forums are usually reporting problems. You don't see threads like "Checked my frame today and everything looks great." FWIW: I did inquire once and Scamp will sell a new complete frame.
