Sounds like you have elephant hide and not rat fur liner. On my 81 with elephant hide I remove the seam tap and caulked the seams, texturing the caulk to match the hide. Seams pretty much disappeared. Then I painted the hide liner with Zinnser White. Came out fantastic, new, and easy to touch up any marks going forward.
