Cooking on the road.

We plan to buy a 16ft Scamp with a side dinette so we can leave the bed down. However, we just realized that this configuration does not have an oven. How do you all approach  meal preperation that requires an oven. I noticed a lot of posts say their units have never been cooked in. it seems we have a lot to learn about this new way of living on the road for several or more weeks at a time.

Cooking on the road

We make foods in advance, freeze them. We take them on the road for warm up on the burners of stove or micro wave. An electric skillet is also a very nice thing to bring along for breakfast skillet meals. We also have a external outlet so we can even use the electic skillet at a picnic table. Eggs, sausage, onions, green pepper, bacon , all stirred up and made in the electric skillet! Hope some of this helps.

BBQ - Coleman Stove

We use the Weber BBQ, microwave when hookups, and Coleman propane two burner stove outside and don't really cook inside much if at all. Exact same way we cook at home, so being on the road is really no different. Personally, haven't ever needed an oven, but some have them.

On my 40-day tri thru the

On my 40-day trip thru the west this past summer, I ate in 8 restaurants (I was either a  guest or had a guest). That means I cooked the other 112 meals in my 13' er. [I seldom eat out at home either, so it was no big change]. I have really nice little wok so I do a lot of stir-fry, using theother burner for rice. I also have a small cast-iron dutch oven, so when I'm in a place where I can have a fire, i start charcoal in one of those small round grills, then put the pot on the coals, with some on the lid  It takes getting used to watching the temperture, but fresh baked bread, or a pie, while on the road is worthit.

It really depends on what you

It really depends on what you want to put in an oven on which way you might go.  I have been looking at a electric multi-cooker that has a function where you could even bake a little cake according to the photos. To me, toaster ovens are so much better than a microwave.  We rarely used a microwave when we had one and haven't had one for years.  What do you usually do with an oven as that might best help someone point you in the right direction.

One of the reason we don't care for tent camping is because you don't have a kitchen or a bathroom so I am always perplexed by those ads that state "never cooked in" or "toilet/shower never used".

Scamp use

I absolutely agree pal. We got our trailer to use. We use our bathroom, shower, and stove! We do a great job of clean up and out when done too. Why have a potty or shower and not use it!

Cooking in the Scamp

We are brand new to trailer life, so new discoveries will certainly be made. As far as cooking, we are sticking with the electric skillet, the micro wave and the stove top. Not sure how much we will be using the outdoor pits for grilling. Lots to learn and discover.

Cooking in the Scamp

When I bought my Scamp 5er, I just knew I had to have the oven!  Over a period of 4 years I used it only two or three times.   When a few nuts and bolts started to come loose, I took the whole oven out (Made a storage cabinet in the space.) and replaced the stove top with a three burner.  Now, the Peanut is almost eight years old,  I have never used three burners at the same time.  I wish I had replaced that three burner with a two burner!   I like to prepare one pot meals and freeze them at home before hand.  The microwave comes in handy for heating.  When electricity is not available, I heat on the stove top.  Now days I don’t cook full meals in the trailer because I don’t want to clean up the mess it makes.  - - Earl

We make chili and things like that prior to departure. We freeze them and use the micro wave oven for warm up. As small as Scamps are, only one season would be suitable for use when it comes to ovens! We have the 2 burner top and it is sufficient.

My original toaster oven,

My original toaster oven, which I had for about 8 years, never got used and finally was dropped and broke when walking through the garage.

I replaced it with a Toaster/Convection Oven making sure it was deep enough for a 12 inch pizza or what ever.  I've had it about 6 years and finally used it last May when I make garlic toast for the Pot Luck at Earl's gathering.   I've used it for something else since but I don't remember what.  Oh I know it was bisquits for breakfast.

I did carry a micorwave as well, but I'm not a microwave cooker and only used it to heat things up.  Well, coffee can be reheated on the stove and the toast/convection oven could be use to heat items if I ever decide to.

Of the 2 applicances I choose to carry the Toast/Convection oven.  The oven sits on the couch out of the way behind the screen door wall.  The microwave had to mounted on my counter extension over the couch, that meant I lost the additional counter space and so out it went.
