I took a drive up to Gold Country Campground this past week. We were able to get 7 more sites for the Far West gathering (One of those sites has already been reserved). So far, we have 11 confirmed reservations. We still have room for more Scampers! While I was there I took some pictures to share. Information on making reservations can be found in post #1 of this thread. - - Earl
Keepsake name buttons will be made for each participant. We still have 5 sites available and would really enjoy making a name button for you!
Reservation instructions can be found in post #1 of this thread. Contact me through the PM service of this website for questions or information. Happy Scamping!

There are several sights in this immediate area you might be interested in visiting while here.
Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills a couple miles from our Scamp site. The park nestles in a little valley 2,400 feet above sea level with open meadows and large valley oaks that once provided the Native Americans of this area with an ample supply of acorns. The park was created in 1968 and preserves a great outcropping of marbleized limestone with some 1,185 mortar holes -- the largest collection of bedrock mortars in North America.
Gold rush town of Volcano. The town is located just north of Pine Grove (just down the hill from Grinding Rocks. The town is registered as a California Historical Landmark.
Black Chasm Cavern is also located in the immediate vacinity. Tours daily are available. Visitors to the cave are enchanted by the beauty of a wide variety of formations.
Kennedy Mine - in Jackson: The Kennedy Mine, famous for being one of the deepest gold mines in the world (at 5912 feet), demonstrates how gold changed an entire way of life in California. The site is open every Saturday and Sunday, March through October.
Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort is also nearby.
The Town of Jackson is a neat place to wander through. They even have a kitchen store with everything for the kitchen! If they don't have what you want - no one else will either. The hot dog place, on main street, is an education on what "hole in the wall" means.
It’s only a short three weeks until Scamp Camp Far West happens. We have two sites left. Information on reserving sites is included in the post right above this one. Need more information? Contact me through the PM of this website. So far we have 15 confirmed reservations. - - Earl
We are sorry to announce that Scamp Camp Far West is now full and we are not able to take any more reservations. We will have a waiting list in case there are any last minute cancellations. You can contact me through the PM service of this website.
An updated participants list can be found in Post #14 of this thread.
May 14, 2014: Scamp Camp Far West doesn't officially get underway until tomorrow. However, 8 early birds arrived here in Pine Grove, CA this afternoon. What did we do this afternoon? After all, this IS the D.O.G. gathering (Dis-Organized Gathering) so nothing happened. We just sat around and visited. This is what the place looks like when it is only partially full. Arriving early were 2 Casitas, 3 Scamp 13's, 1 Escape 17', 1 Scamp 19'; and 1 SOB (hence the title "Fiberglass and Friends!"
May 15, 2014: Scamp Camp Far West got underway today with more arrivals. So far, there are 4 casitas, 3 scamp 19’ 5ers, 1 Scamp 16’, 4 Scamp 13’s, 1 Escape 17’, 1 SOB. What did we do today? More of the same that we did yesterday. The only thing is there were more people to visit with. When you get tired with one group, the chair is picked up and you move to another group. One of my Loyal Readers thought I was having Dairy Queen withdrawals and brought a freezer supply of DQ Blizzards. Gee, how nice is that! They kept insisting the DQ was just up the road. Ha! They can’t fool me. There isn’t a DQ within 75 miles of this place. We did enjoy a campfire tonight. One of our SOI members, Lorie, even celebrated a spontaneous birthday/retirement party with refreshments.
Hail, Hail, the gang’s all here! Scamp Camp Far West moved into high gear today -- that’s if you call our D.O.G. planning high gear. The day dawned bright and clear with a pleasant temperature on the horizon. All of our participants have now arrived and we were busy meeting, greeting, and visiting. We have 31 Scampers in attendance who brought 18 trailers with them. There are 6 Scamp 13‘s; 2 Scamp 16‘s; 3 Scamp 5ers; 1 Escape 17; 4 Casitas, 1 Lil’ Joe; and 1 SOB. The only planned non-organized activity was the no host hot dog feed for tonight. For a non-planned event we sure ate well! We also enjoyed TWO campfires.
P.S. Another DQ Blizzard appeared on my doorstep this afternoon.
There were more non-planned activities for today. In the afternoon spontaneous ladder ball games happened where several players continued to show their expert form. In the evening the Dis-Organized Gathering potluck just (sort of) happened. The only planning for that event was the gathering time would be 5:30. You know what? It just (sort of) happened. With everyone accounted for, the requisite group photo was taken. Our meal was started right on time (whatever that time might have been because it was a non-planned event! As usual, at any gathering of “eggs”, there was plenty to eat with lots left over. It seems like “egg heads” certainly enjoy their potlucks! Three members were awarded their official SOI hats.
P.S. Another DQ Blizzard appeared on my doorstep this afternoon. Thanks to the (more or less) anonymous benefactors who provided those delicious treats!

Well what a great time Lily and I had at the D.O.G., commonly known as the Scamp Camp Far West. I'm looking forward to next year already.
Great event Earl.
