Maintenance questions

Some help please: (going to spring training soon and need to get ready)

1. What is the best grease for the wheel bearings.  Ours is a 16 foot 2013

2. How do you suggest I check the brake lining wear?

3. Is there a manual that has more details on how to repair items?

Thank you

Bearing Grease

I decided to use Lucas "Red And Tacky" grease (available at Walmart or Home Depot and your local Auto Parts Store) for my bearings. However, any good bearing grease you choose will be fine, just keep it clean when installing and re-pack your bearings on a regular basis.

Note: Some suggest re-packing your bearings annually before the camping season if the camper sits, due to moisture accumulation while in storage.

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!

Checking Your Brakes

To check your brakes you simply pull off the brake drum and inspect them for wear and cracking. If the brake linings are too thin, it is time to replace them. If they are cracked or broken, it is time to replace them. If there is scoring on the brake drum or un-even wear on the drum or brake linings, it is time to replace them. You also need to check for unusual wear on the magnets and the front surface of the brake drum where the magnet contacts the drum.

If you need  to replace your brakes, you have a couple of options: One, you can get parts from your local Auto Parts Store ( Napa has them), or you can order a complete brake assembly and simply replace the backing plate with all the brake parts already attached. If I had to replace my brakes again, I would order the complete brake assembly.

Additionally, you may need to get the brake drums turned, you will need to find a machine shop that has the ability to turn the drum face (for the magnet) as well as where the brake linings contact the drum.

Note: if the brake linings are too thin it will be obvious ( 1/8 of an inch or less).

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!

Repair Manual

For repairs, your best bet is the Owner's Manual for each individual component (i.e.: Axles, Fridge, Furnace, Water Heater, etc). Knowing your Model Numbers and Serial Numbers will help you find the correct replacement parts (write your model numbers on the front of each manual) Many Owners Manuals have a "Blown Up Parts" diagram showing corresponding part numbers near the back of the manual.

This "Blown Up Parts" diagram is invaluable in diagnosing the problem and figuring out how to disassemble the component to gain access for your repairs.

You can find many Owners Manuals on the Internet in PDF format. I suggest downloading the manuals for all your components BEFORE you need them and store all together in an easy-to-find folder on your computer or smart phone.

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!
