Hot water heater plug help????

The white plastic hot water heater plug is really hard to get a socket onto. It is tucked right behind the copper tubing and also seems screwed in too tight.  Any tips?

Wrench

Try an open end/box end wrench. Should be able to get it.
Be careful with all attempts as the plastic nuts round out real easily. That's why they're cheap to replace. I usually keep a spare plug or two.

Plug removal

The correct size socket with a 6" extension should get the plug out with no issues. The  Atwood plastic plug is an odd ball size. I think it is 7/8" and a six point socket helps not to round the plug off. I will try to verify the size. It is almost impossible to remove it with a flat wrench.

Amazon said it removed with a 7/8" wrench.

Scamp WH plug issues

I don't have a Atwood WH currently but I have had issues with the WH plug on a previous trailers. I went out to my shop and found the socket I bought to remove the water heater plug since I stated it was an odd ball size. It is a six point 15/16" socket.

Atwood Water Heater Drain Plug

Yes, it is 15/16 inch. I use a socket with a 9 or 10 inch extension on it.

I have an extension which allows the socket to "wobble" at the end that allows the socket to fit the drain plug at just-the-right angle (you can also use a universal joint).

I also have a very short crescent wrench which works well ( short is 3 to 4 inches ).

Water heater plug

Newbie question:  What is the water heater plug for?  What purpose does it serve and how it is used?  Mine was not on tight so water was leaking out it, even with no outside water hooked up, and when I removed it, a ton of water shot out of it.

Water Heater Plug Functions

The Water Heater Plug serves two functions, first, it lets you drain your Water Heater for winter storage so your tank doesn't freeze, secondly, it allows you to clean out your Water Heater. You should flush out your Water Heater at least once per year to get the accumulated mineral deposits out of your water heater's tank. Camco sells a nozzle for your garden hose that will let you spray fresh water into your tank to flush out all the mineral deposits from inside your tank.
