Greetings from Buckingham County Va,

I had been looking for a camper for a while and had finally decided to look for a Fiberglass model. One recent afternoon, on a road that I have traveled every work day for 17 years, I spotted it.  I had never noticed it before because it was covered, but recent storms had blown the cover off revealing a bright (my imagination) white fiberglass camper!  After a quick inquiry I learned that it could be for sale, and for the princely sum of seven hundred dollars the 1979 16 foot Scamp was mine. It is rough and ready to be sure. The down side of this deal is that with the exception of the closet and couch base (it has the # 4 interior layout) the interior is gone. Could it be that another down side is that I paid seven hundred dollars for it?? I've never been one to shy away from a good project, and just hated to see this little camper being neglected. I spent the day today in the rain beginning the resurrection and found out why it was under cover.  I have just ordered my first part, a new vent!

I'm going to need many interior pieces and I'm sure plenty of advice, so be forewarned!  I have already started a list, but If anyone knows of any used interior items for sale, let me know!  I'll post some pics soon...

Welcome to the group

Good to have another Va. Scamp on the road. If you have a title, the shell is not messed up and you can tow it anything under $1K is a good deal. If the vent was missing you can more than likely count on floor work. Just look at it this way, with no furniture you have a clean slate to start with. I know several people who started with stripped out Scamps and ended up some really nice trailers. First clean it up, make a list of needed repairs and start at the ground and work up after you find and repair all the leaks.

Thanks everyone for the comments,

My Scamp does have a title, the VIN is E910063. Over the years Virginia has made it increasingly difficult to get a title if you don't have one in hand, so I was glad this one had it. Aside from having some extra screw holes in it, the shell seems to be in good shape. I'm attaching a few before pics, maybe someone can tell me if all of the add-ons on the shell are factory. The access doors on the lower rear look like they might have been added at some point and the 4 tail lights look kinda odd.... why 4 of them??

16 feet of project!

From my chair in front of the computer, I'd say that you got a BARGAIN.  If it were my project, A 54" bed would be at the top of the list.   I frequently hear of great deals and this on qualifies!

Thanks Bob

Going to look into the 54" bed.  I'm sure a little extra room will go a long way. I have some time to decide if I want to go with originality....

Add ons

The access doors are add ons but they really come in handy. The four tail lights were add ons at that time but are now requested options. The higher tail lights are a real good thing for safety and visibility. The old top hat tail lights are dim and hard to see, I usually replace the orig. top hats with  7" LED school bus lights. The majority of scamp accidents are due to rear end collisions. FWIW the majority of Casita wrecks are from trailer roll overs.

Get some Jo Max house cleaner and clorox and scrub it down then let it set in the sun for a day and the shell will brighten right up. Expect to spend about  $1.5-2K to fix it up but you should have a really nice trailer when you are done.

The awning track is also an orig. option which is nice. You can use a bad awning and water won't run down the side of the trailer.

Thanks Eddie

I thought the access doors were add ons...  The extra tail lights do sound like a good idea.  I finished the first round of scrubbing yesterday and it's looking alot better! Looking forward to digging into it this weekend...I'll definitely keep in touch, would love to see another Scamp as a reference.  I don't remember ever seeing another in my travels.

In it's day

In it's day it was a very nicely equipped trailer. Did the PO know where the cabinets went to? I have a 16DX that you can get measurements from if you want to go with a wood interior. My trailer will be back in Va. in April.

Blank slate

Great project trailer. Need some inside pics so we can see what's what. Door looks to be having alignment issues which is not unusual in older scamps, but if all the interior support structure is gone, it could be roof sag related.

This one should clean up nice, love the old jalousy Windows. Pull them, clean them up and reseat with butyl tape and they'll be good to go for a long time. Hatches and extra lights are great to have like Eddie says.

This one is all ready to go for a bag awning which I have a write up on here.  http://www.scampowners.com/forums/shademaker-awning-install-13-scamp

Diamond in the rough.
