One of the biggest issues I've always had with the Egg Trailers is the hanging closet. For our family, we don't need to hang clothes to go camping, we need storage space. So on my 1981 Scamp and now on my 2005 Escape I have added shelving to the closets to add storage space. I owe this closet shelf idea to Joe Z who did a similar project to his Casita using PVC pipe and fittings which doesn't require anything to have to be screwed in and can be easily removed later if needed.
This is our closet in the Escape, in the Scamp it was floor to ceiling, but a similar concept:
Here are some pictures of how I built the base frame:
Here is the frame completed and the shelves installed:
I found a 1/4" Melamine board that I cut the 2-shelves from which just lay on the PVC frame. I put a 3/4 self taping pipe insulation at the back edge of each shelf to protect any finish and snug up the fit. I will add the finish pictures with the shelves tomorrow.
Total cost for the closet PVC frame and shelves, under $20
Time commitment for the project. 1 hour.
Clever!!
LOL...... Now i have to put shelves in my new trailer. great job there :)

I knew i needed to put shelves in the closet after seeing your pics. Having the rounded wall in the back side of the casita closet had me bending pvc pipe with a torch to get the fit i wanted..... standing up you do not see the underside pvc at all and now my hanging closet is more functional.

Great Idea on bending the PVC to fit the closet. I have done it many times but it never crossed my mind for this application.

Great job Joe! You didn't tell me about bending the pipe, but fortunately on the escape closet it didn't need bending. Most of the Scamp closets should be a straight frame as well.
What did you use for your shelf material??

Greg,
I just realized i didn't have the forum setup to notify me when i post so just noticed it now. Not sure what it's called but it's the stuff you put on top of workbenches to protect them..... It's a brown shiny composite of some sort. In home depot it's right next to the pre-cut pieces of plywood. I bought a 2' by 4' piece for $6.50. the cutout on the lower shelf is for that rack you see on the door in case i want to put tall items in there..... I have a cover up piece if needed.
The shelves are so much more functional for me. I could have went half way across and left some hanging space which would be easy if i wanted it.

What size PVC pipe do you use? ' or would 3/4" OD doo?
Joe:
The material you described is called masonite, it is chocolate brown and has a smooth side and a tiny waffle pattern on the other side. It is usually available in 1/8 inch or 1/4 inch thickness, you can also glue two pieces together if you want a thicker shelf. This material is also available with a glossy white finish.
As Always,
Happy Scamping !!!
3/4" White PVC works Perfect..... 1/2" is a little too wobbly...... I did not glue anything together in case i need to take it apart for any reason.... I believe Greg did the same thing

Thanks, I had read on another site of people doing this using 1". When I went to Home Depot it seemed to me the 3/4" would work so I held back. Now I can have a project to do! Thanks
