This mod allows you to quickly and easily set up a two-person mini-dinette while still having a single bed 34" wide available.
And of course, the big bed and main table can still be set up exactly as before.
It uses the existing Scamp 20" x 30" bed board, Scamp cushions (modified), and a removable RV/marine table leg and base system. Adding only about 3 pounds, the leg and base system used was the ITC “Redwood” model TL 5000-B-29. It's available at ITC-US.com or Amazon. Scamp also has a leg and base used in their 16' dinette that should work.
Step 1: To switch from big bed to mini-dinette, fold back the bedding from the front 20" of bed onto the 34" of bed space left. (Note to those who have extra cushioning on top of Scamp's 4" cushions: We cut our egg-crate topper down the middle to be able to stack one piece on top of the other.)
The two center cushions modified were new ones purchased from Scamp, which are from a deluxe 16' layout B trailer. The cushions have one 34" section and two 10” sections to accommodate a curved wall in that model. For seat backs, we use the two 10" sections, keeping them attached to each other, but cut from their respective 34" sections. Velcro sewn on a flap attaches to Velcro sewn onto the adjacent 34” cushion.
Our original big bed cushions (with two sections, 44” and 10”) could have been modified by cutting the foam and doing the upholstery work. However, we opted to buy the whole cushions from Scamp and just do the Velcro modification.
Step 2: Detach each small cushion set from the center cushions and place in the seat back position on both sides. Set aside the 20" x 30" bed board.
Step 3: Lock the table leg into the newly installed base with a quick turn. Snap the 20" x 30" bed board onto the table leg, and it's ready!
The board rotates freely, making it easy to sit down and position the table as desired.
WARNING: When installing the table leg base, the pilot holes and screws must not go through the floor and penetrate the gray water tank directly underneath. Our Scamp's floor is 5/8" thick, plus the vinyl flooring. We used #12 x1" stainless oval head coarse thread screws, and ground off 3/16" to shorten them. Coarse threads are best for wood; fine threads are for sheet metal and will strip in wood more easily.
This is the plastic table leg receiver installed on the underside of the 20" x 30" bed board. It's attached with #12x1/2" stainless oval head course thread screws.
Viewed from beneath the main table, the new mini-dinette table leg clips for storage into two white plastic clips fastened to the table's underside to the right of the fold-down leg. (Uxcell 50 mm diameter PPR U-shaped pipe clamps, available on Amazon.)
