Using a transporter to pick up Scamp from factory

Transport scamp

Thanks for your info. I did find a company who will transport my scamp on a trailer. The price will be around $800 or $900 depending on when i book it. They transported my grandsons car to texas and back last summer and no problems. 

I will check them them out further. If i use them i will ne able to give them a review on this forum.

Other delivery options

My Scamp is scheduled to be ready in early December. I live in NM. I'm thinking of having it delivered rather than a 1,400 mike trip in possible bad winter weather (I lived in Minnesota so I know how bad it can get sometimes) and in the middle of this virus surge. Having read stories here, I'm questioning having them do the delivery. Transporting on a trailer would be better. Scamps price to bring it here is $2,000. Suggestions? Thanks. Tom

About Scamp delivery in the winter

Hi Tom.  I grew up in Minnesota and we tow our Scamp up there (960 miles one way) about two or three times a year during snow-free months.  1. When do you need your Scamp?  If you do not need your Scamp until spring, ask Scamp if they can keep it for you over the winter.  They have a lot of land to store trailers.  2.  If you could have someone deliver it to you for $800-$900 like Toni, that might be worth it.  If it is going to cost $2,000, I would have second thoughts.  3.  How much time do you have and how flexible is your schedule?  If you are flexible, you could watch the long-term weather forecast and make a trip to get it during good weather.  If you are not in a hurry, you could take your time and have an interesting trip/adventure.  5.  It also will depend on your experience/comfort towing a trailer.  4.  With respect to Covid, you would probably have to stay in a motel on the way up and do takeout (comfort level?).  On the way back, you could sleep in your trailer, make your meals, and use your toilet instead of the gas station's, which is what we do.  I have used porta-potty plastic bags in the toilet when I do not want to carry water in the tanks.  If you are going to camp on the way back, map out your camping locations (e.g., Cracker Barrels, Super Walmarts, KOA, etc.) so you have a port in a storm.  Stop for the night early.

Re Scamp delivery in winter

Thanks for that very substantive response, Jim. I don't have to have the trailer on any specific date, but will be able to use it a lot here in NM over the winter months.

One thing that inspired me to go ahead and buy one is the option to travel overnight more easily during the pandemic. I have thought about the fact that once I pick it up, I'm no longer pressed to get back quickly since I'll be self-contained at that point. I am not experienced in towing trailers so would plan to take it easy during my initial outings (and drive home). I'd take the southern route back to get out of winter as quickly as possible. I've been in ice storms in Nebraska at that time of year. Not fun. 

When you say you'd think twice about a $2,000 Scamp delivery, I assume it's the price, not the idea of someone towing it down here. Right?

Great suggestion on the use of the bags rather than deal with water and waste disposal for such a trip. That would simplify things. 

I'm going to look into options other than Scamp delivery and report back to the group if I find some.

Delivery of Scamp

Hi Tom.  I am not opposed to someone delivering the trailer by towing or on a truck.  I think $2,000 is a lot--a significant percentage of the price of the trailer.

You might be able to get it hauled on a truck but I have no idea about the price.  Independent truckers haul things one-way.  They would prefer to haul something on their return trip.  There are companies that arrange return trip pick ups for truckers.  A high school friend used to arrange cargo pick ups for truckers via the Internet and phone.  He seems to be doing something different now.  However, you might be able to find someone via the Internet that arranges cargo pick up.  They might be able to haul the Scamp on a flat bed or inside a semi rig.  You might be able to pick your Scamp up in Dallas, Denver, or some place closer and warmer if they can't deliver to NM. 

With respect to picking it up yourself, you might get lucky with the weather.  I remember that there were years when we wondered whether we would have a white Christmas.  Of course, snow would usually fall by Christmas.  Then, there are some years that winter comes early big time but I think that is less common now than when I was young.  Might be cold.  Picking it up in January and February would be more risky.  Too bad that you couldn't pick the Scamp up last week.  They were having a heat wave in Minnesota.  My cousin was hunting pheasants in his shorts. Scamp Delivery

Yes, it's been pretty warm up there. Maybe it'll hold up for another month. Thanks for the note, Jim.

A quick search for services that haul trailers, suggests a rate of just under $1 per mile ( $.95 on one site). Google says it's 1,300 miles. In my travels to Minneapolis it has always ended up to be about 1,400. I don't know if I can find someone who will actually pickup in Backus and deliver here, but assuming some charge to pick it up there, I'm guessing I'd be closing in on $1,500.

Scamp goes by zone. NM is zone 4 = $2,000. Colorado is zone 3 = $1,500. My best option may be to meet the driver in southern Colorado. It's less than 300 miles, all interstate.

Still checking out options.  Tom

Corrosion? Really?

Okay, I agree delivering a Scamp during bad weather with goop on the road isn't ideal, but if one trip in bad conditions causes permanent corrosion then that doesn't hold much hope for the future,does it? Wash it off at a car wash and it should be fine.

Yes I agree that after thinking about it, the idea that the trailer could suffer major corrosion after a single trip in bad weather seems hard to believe. I believe the damage shown in the picture must have been present when the trailer left the factory. That's disturbing, of course, but a different issue than delivery.

Bad Weather Delivery

When we bought our new Scamp in 2015 we paid for it to be delivered. We knew it would be delivered in Feb. so I talked with Jim on two occasions asking that they do not deliver it in bad weather. He assured me they wouldn't! THEY DID! It arrived with 1/2 inch of gray ice all over it! The temp was below freezing so there was no way to wash the trailer.  That year the temps here in Maine stayed below freezing for the entire month. I couldn't do anything with it for a month. I have had to repaint most of the frame and the two LPG tanks. The wiring to the battery was so corroded that it needed to be replaced. Even the bare metal at the front of the awning got corroded! The picture shows the passenger side front marker light on our brand new Scamp in early March of that year before we even got to use it. Scamp did send use a new marker light.
