Decoding VIN

My 13 footer has been in the family for 15-20 years. It was owned by my mother for most of that time. After she moved into a nursing home I inherited it. We could never find the VIN and assumed it didn't have one. After researching here and on the Scamp site I found where it was. After stripping the paint it is legible. This is what it says: .E.1. 5515. If I understand correctly that could be either 1971 or 1981. Stamped above that number is 11.80, which makes me think it was made in November of 1980 as a 1981 model. Is that correct?

I am getting ready to make a trip to Backus to have the axle replaced but it might be getting late in the year for that. I know what Minnesota winters are like

Thanks

VIN year

I had a Scamp date stamped 1289. Scamps call on mine was it was a 1989 trailer not a 1990. I was told they change models by calendar year. But that was quite a few years ago.

I saw the VIN decoder and it

I saw the VIN decoder and it is not exactly clear. It says that from 1971 through 1982 the VIN started with the letter E followed by a single number designating the year then a three, four or five digit serial number. In that case an E1 could mean 1971 or 1981 and an E2 could mean 1972 or 1982. I guess it's not really that important except for curiosity. Also my insurance company and the DMV want to know the year for insurance and tags. I can just tell them it is a 1981 model. A title is not required for a trailer of this size in my state.

RV / trailer?

A Scamp may not be a trailer in KS.

An RV, according to Kansas law, is a vehicle or "vehicular-type unit" built on a chassis, that has been designed for use as temporary living quarters for camping, vacation, travel and general recreation. In addition, an RV must also have these basic features:

  • Electrical system stronger than 12 volts.
  • Provisions for plumbing.
  • Wired for area heating.

Motor homes, campers, and recreational vehicles (RVs) that meet all the states criteria are registered with the Kansas Department of Revenue (DOR) under a separate type of RV title, though the registration process itself is the same as registering a passenger vehicle.
