The transmission on my Subaru Forester went south a week ago, and the shop is telling me it won't be fixed until Monday afternoon. Problem is that we are scheduled to leave Sun afternoon for a camping trip, our big vacation for the year. We have a 13' Scamp. The shop is telling me they will try to find me a tow vehicle they can provide me so we can pull the trailer. My question...should I hold out for a TV with a 7 pin connector and a controller for the brakes, or how big a vehicle do I need to tow a 1200+ lb trailer without using the electric brakes? Is it even possible to use a vehicle without a 7 pin connector? Is there an adapter available?

when are electric brakes necessary?
Judy and Sue. There is a 4 pin to 7 pin adapter. U-Haul sells them for those of us with 7 pin plugs on a TV, since U-Haul rental trailers have 4 pin connectors. When I was shopping for a 13' most friends said I didn't need a trailer brake. Check state regs to find out about trailer weight/ brakes.
I am sure others who tow 13' trailers will chime in.

Thanks for the response. Can always count on someone on this site having some helpful info!
Turns out it is a moot point...no truck of any kind wired to haul any kind of trailer available at this point anywhere within a reasonable distance. Guess we will be waiting for our vehicle to be fixed. Half a vacation is better than none...?

Side comment: If it is an automatic tranny make SURE you get an auxiliary transmission cooler installed or you risk more problems.
