We’ve been towing our 16ft Scamp with a 2014 Volkswagen Touareg which has a 7,700 towing capacity. The Touareg didn’t come with a tow package so we installed an aftermarket hitch and then took it to the dealer to install the 7 pin connector and the brake controller. So far no issues...good luck!
I've noticed the VW Touareg is usually one of the only VW models that are recommended for towing. That is a nice tow rating it has so I can see why. Should be a good match with plenty of margin to spare.
We towed our 16 standard across the Rockies and the Sierras with a 4 cyl, 5 speed manual Tacoma. Run it in 4th of flat ground, 5th down hill, and can get down to 2nd at 40 mph going up hill. Wish I had the 6 cyl for the hills.
I went to Alaska from upstate NY with friends, me towing an Escape 17B (3100/340 pounds) towing with a 2010 V6 & tow package RAV4, and them towing a Scamp 16, layout 4 with a 2011 Toyota Sienna van (tow package rated 3500/350). No problems for either, other than the front wheel drive Sienna spinning tires on a couple of steep gravel campground roads.
I have the above vehicle, with a tow capacity of 3500 lbs. It has nearly 400,000 miles on it and runs well. I'm getting a 16' Scamp, layout 4. I have no plans to drive over the Rocky Mtns because I think it will be too much for my truck, and figure at most I'll add another 500 lbs in "stuff" into my Scamp over it's base weight. I'm having wiring installed, 7 pin, to my truck, as recommended by Scamp.
Is it reasonable to expect my Toyota can tow my Scamp, and is there anything else I should add to my Toyota to make it towing ready (other than maybe larger side-view mirrors). Any suggestions appreciated.

Smaller cars/suv/trucks just have to work too hard. Consider a V8 truck/suv. They will make your trips more enjoyable.

We are planning on using our van to pull I saw videos of others using. It's also 3.5 6 cylinder. Rated 3600.
