The trip home to the PNW with our new 13' Scamp

We arrived on the 24th of June to pick up our new 13' Scamp with bath.  We camped at Ruttgers Pine Mtn Resort (a very nice place, BTW!), and we stayed three nights.  If possible, I strongly suggest picking up your camper, so that you can have little or big issues addressed by the very kind folks at Scamp.  Our camper was beautiful, but one option which we had requested was installed incorrectly, and there were a few other issues.  We ran into Kent Eveland and Micah at the restaurant (very good) across the hwy, where we were having a delicious breakfast while our concerns were being addressed.  (bragging moment: We met Floyd!!!!  I have been lurking on this site for a year, reading all the posts and admiring especially those from some fellow named Floyd, and there he was in the flesh!!! Got some great fresh advice from him and got a chance to view all his great mods of his Scamp - priceless :)

We found everyone at Scamp to be kind and interested in making the little things right.  For us, the biggest issue was the adjustment of the door so that that we did not have to slam it and so that the the seal was appropriate.  (We had the time, and others might not, but I strongly suggest a patient, calm approach, as the Evelands wanted us to be satisfied.)  I have to say, it was a great experience for us in Backus, and everyone we met, from the diner folks to the campground folks to the folks at the tire shop who balanced our wheels, and especially Jared and all who worked at Scamp - they were such nice people!

We met two other new owners of Scamps at Ruttgers and a couple who had brought theirs to be fitted with the new Fiamma awning - what fun!  We also learned to use the sewer hose at the dump area of Ruttgers (great, since just about everyone else there had full hookups at their site, so we had the dump area to ourselves and were not at all pressured!).

We left Scamp in the late afternoon, and we ended up in Fargo ND (2.5 hrs away) after a great dinner at Four Seas in Park Rapids MN (their Main St is great! You can park your rig in the MIDDLE of the street - easy in and out).  We were then initiates in the Walmart parking lot camping club! I have to say, we spent a VERY comfortable, quiet night at the 55th Ave Fargo Walmart; everyone was respectful and quiet, and it was not difficult to pull to a level spot.

Our trip home consisted of a few more Walmart parking lots (Billings and Missoula - Billings was great, Missoula was quiet but the city compost facility is across the street...), some fabulous days at Yellowstone NP, and some great days in the Wallowa Mtns staying in Enterprise OR at Log House RV park (super kind and interesting owner and tenants).  The Walmarts and Yellowstone were our initiation to dry camping with a Scamp, and all went well.

We had a popup camper for a few years, which was fun, but we are very happy to have the Scamp.  From our first night in Fargo, where scary thunderstorms with hail greeted us, to our home in Portland OR, we had significant rain and some wind at times, and our Scamp was dry and comfortable.

Suggestions for those picking up in Backus:

Consider a 20' or 25' fresh water hose.  I bought a 10 ft hose, not realizing that the fresh water tank fill is on the back passenger side of the Scamp, not the driver's side where the city water and electric are; it was awkward trying to fill the fresh tank with the hose.  (We brought bleach and a spray bottle; we used bleach to sanitize the fresh water tank while at Ruttgers, and we used bleach water in the spray bottle to sanitize fresh water hose hookups on our journey).

We carried Reese hitch ball lube and used a cheap hitch ball cover on the way out to pick up the Scamp.  I definitely recommend using lube on the hitch ball :)

We had purchased the Rhino sewer hose kit and had it stored in a plastic bin in our truck.  On our way home, though, we simply used the hose provided by Scamp, and that was OK; my big gripe with it is that it does not hold its shape, but it worked fine.  We plan on implementing one of the strap-to-bumper or strap-under-the-trailer hose mods shown on this site to store the Rhino hose.

We got the front porch and the trailer tongue LED lights, and their two switches are on the side of the door very close to where one grips the screen door; three times we noticed one of those outdoor lights on during the day, having unintentionally hit its switch.  I plan to make that more difficult, perhaps with a Velcro strap over each switch.

We replaced the metal spiral support by the sink with this tree, available at the factory :)

We are happy Scampers!
