Towing a 13 ft with a 2015 Chevvy Volt?

The manual says it is not designed for pulling trailers, but IS anyone pulling a 13 ft Scamp in spite of this? Do you know of anyone doing so?

THANKS.

Not Advised

"Per GM, towing anything with the Volt is 'not allowed'. So far it's unknown whether it will actually damage anything or simply void the warranty if anything does break, but in either case it's probably not a good idea."

Even if you were to go against the manufacturer info and tow something with the Volt you certainly wouldn't be rated anywhere near the 1500-2000lbs and 200lb hitch weight to pull a Scamp 13. Doesn't mean someone hasn't tried it, we're definitely not recommending it be tried.

On E-Trailer

I noticed someone asked this question on e-trailer and that might have been OP.  I would take their advice and in your case, it says that you should not tow and e-trailer said at most 1,000 lbs, 100 lbs. hitch weight, if it was recommended which it isn't.  Trust me when I tell you that a towing experience with a vehicle that is made to tow what you are towing is much more pleasant and safe then just getting by.  If I were determined to tow something with that vehicle, I would look at motorcycle pop-ups or the lightest of teardrops and first find someone else successfully doing it before I invested my time and money in the attempt.  If under warranty, it will most likely void your warranty as they'll see the hitch.

I do know how disappointing it is to learn that the trailers weigh so much and most vehicles years ago were able to more than adequately tow these trailers.

Towing With a Chevy Volt

Could you tow with a Chevy Volt?    Maybe....

Should you tow with a Chevy Volt?    Probably Not...

Your first problem is that nobody manufactures a hitch for your vehicle, so, you have to get a custom hitch installed =  more $$$.

Your next problem will be that the rear end of your Volt will probably be sagging, so, you have to beef up the rear suspension = more $$$.

If you get past those two hurdles, you can't get past the fact that the Manufacturer does not recommend towing with this vehicle.

Consequently, if you get into an accident, even if the accident is not your fault, some lawyer is going to claim that you should not have been on the road because you were driving an UNSAFE VEHICLE (because, the Manufacturer said Do Not Tow With This Vehicle).

Additionally, your Insurance company will not pay any damages, again, because you were driving an UNSAFE VEHICLE, which you intentionally modified against the Manufacturers Specifications.

So, if you have lots of money to add a custom hitch to your Chevy Volt, AND, you don't mind loosing the rest of your money to some scheming lawyer working on a contingency basis for some poor schmuck that saw $$$$ signs flash before their eyes just before they crashed into you...

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!
