2014 Ford Escape towing 16' Scamp

Curious if there is any information out there about towing a fully loaded16' Scamp with a 2.0l fuel injected Ford Escape.  The vehicle has a tow package (transmission cooler, anti-sway bars) and is rated to tow 3500 lbs.  Thanks.

Scamp 16 Trailer Weight

Paul,

According to the Scamp 16' Deluxe specifications, (listed in the "Resources" section) a new Scamp 16' Deluxe weighs between 2,200 and 2,600 lbs. This would leave you with at least 900 lbs towing capacity to pack your gear into the Scamp.

One travel tip: if you are planning a long haul, only fill your water tank with a few gallons of water (enough to wash and flush). Then, fill up your tank when you arrive at your destination, this way, you are not burning gas to carry all that extra water.

Happy Scamping !!!

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!

My Trailer Weight

Well...

This is a new-to-me trailer that my wife and I intend to retire to on a full-time basis.

Consequently, it is a "Some Other Brand" / Big Box trailer that would make you faint if I told you how much the whole rig weighed sitting on the scale.

Basically, the trailer weighed the same as my fullsize E-250 van.

We decided to get it weighed on our way home from picking it up from out of town to establish a "Baseline" weight.

We weighed it with all three tanks at 2/3 filled.

Happy Scamping !!!

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!

towing

I appreciate your help posting here.  I am hoping to become educated on towing a 19' 5th wheel Scamp.  My question is, "Is a Toyota Tacoma, 6 cylinders, tow package appropriate for towing this trailer?"

Choosing a 5th Wheel Tow Vehicle

Choosing a Tow Vehicle for a 5th Wheel involves more than just knowing the Tow Capacity of the vehicle and the weight of the 5th Wheel Trailer.

First, there is the installation of the 5th Wheel Hitch. I would seriously consider how long I planned to keep the Tow Vehicle before I spent money to install a 5th Wheel on a truck I wasn't going to keep very long. I wouldn't want to pay again to have the hitch re-installed on my next vehicle.

Additionally, you need to determine if you can even install the 5th wheel hitch on your vehicle and if it will take expensive customization to install the 5th wheel on your truck. In regard to your Toyota Tacoma, you need to read the post titled:

"2014 short bed Tacoma desperate seeking 5th wheel hitch install"

http://www.scampcamper.com/forums/2014-short-bed-tacoma-desperate-seeking-5th-wheel-hitch-install

This post outlines some special issues regarding installation of a 5th Wheel Hitch on a Toyota Tacoma.

U-Haul is a popular option for Hitch Installs, but, I like using the Independent shops that only do Hitches and Trailer work, those guys really know their business and can usually perform the custom work that U-Haul won't (or can't) do.

Once you have determined your Tow Capacity and if the 5th Wheel will install in your Truck you need to determine if your truck will fit under the Scamp. This step is especially important for Scamp 5th Wheels because they are built closer to the ground than the "Big Box" 5th Wheels from other manufacturers.

Read the post titled:

     "Clearance Between Trailer and Truck"

http://www.scampcamper.com/forums/clearance-between-trailer-and-truck

If you have a Short-Bed Truck, special consideration will need to be given to the hitch (roller hitch) and Truck-to-Cab clearances.

Answers to all the above will allow you to determine if your Truck is the appropriate Tow Vehicle for your Scamp 5th Wheel.

As always,

Happy Scamping !!!

Towing

We have a 16 ft Scamp and tow with a 6 cylinder Ford Escape. I sure feel it back there, and feel it is the max I can tow with  a grams mount front wheel drive vehicle. Is your truck a rear wheel drive?

Actual Trailer Weights

Some of you may have see the "Trailer Weights in the Real World" thread at the Fiberglass RV forum.  Since Federick has retired, he no longer takes scales to rallies, but with his permission, I have an expanded Excel version that can be sorted in a number of ways.  If you actrually weigh your trailer, please forward the axle & tongue weight so I can add it to the spreadsheet.  The more we have, the more useful it becomes.  Here is the spreadsheet.
