Scamp 5th Wheel - Comfort for Someone 6'2"?

We just joined the forum looking for information.  We want to get a small trailer and have had 8 RVs over several years, like 30.  We are both 59 years old and have an adult son with DS who is 27 plus pets so "small" is challenging with my husband's height of 6'2" being the biggest challenge.  The only thing we see with Scamp that might work is the 5th wheel but have been unable to get the loft bed size.  I did email Scamp yesterday for an anwser but am very anxious to know so I'm still searching the internet.  We are looking at 3 manufacturers right now.  With small I realize there will be many tradeoffs.  To me, Scamp is "Americana".

Editing:  On another forum, I found photos and details on how someone was modifying the bed to run the opposite direction.  I had wondered if that were possible as someone else had mentioned to me that they were going to try to do that.  It eliminates use of the bunks at the foot of the bed although I do wonder if approaching the mod a little differently would allow for the use of the bottom bunk.

We are "campers" not RVers so small inside, big outside would be ideal.

5er Bed Size

I'm not sure what the bed size in the 5er is.  They say it's supposed to be a "queen bed" but I don't really believe that.  It seems a lot smaller.  Perhaps they mean a "trailer queen".  With the front bath, turning the bed lengthwise is not a possibility.  I have seen a couple with a side bath and the bed modified to lengthwise.  Of course you will be loosing space.  My 5er has the front bath.  I do have two friends who have a front bath 5er.  They are both either tall or big and they seem to make it work.  The length is sort of short.  I'm not tall but can reach the head and foot sides without too much trouble.

I am 5'9 and have to lay

I am 5'9 and have to lay diagonally to fit due to the inside windo flanges.

Thanks!

Scamp bed sizes

Standard bed 44x78

Deluxe Bed 54x78

Standard 5th Scamp w side bath is the only model that can be modded to front to rear bed.  Escape 5th wheel is manufactured with front to rear bed and is 60x80.

Thanks!  We had really liked

Thanks!  We had really liked the Deluxe but realized that probably wouldn't work.  It is a struggle.  The Escape would work but it is more expensive and there is a long wait and I attempt to shop USA made first with a  passion.  Oliver is back but parting with that much cash would be a tough decision.  It isn't that units wouldn't be worth the asking price but the "price versus value" to us.  So, back to the drawing board.  Thanks again.

Bigfoot 5th wheel

One option would be the Bigfoot 5th wheel.  Those are currently only availble on the used market and haven't been made in awhile.  They do have a Queen size bed in the upper and plenty of headroom in the cabin for 6'2".  It will take a bit to find one as they only come up once and awhile.  Bigfoots are Canadian made as well but quite a few of the brands are Canadian.  We usually have some listings for these in the US but currently none are listed.

Current listings:

Bigfoot 5th Wheel

Bigfoot Tandem 5th Wheel

Bigfoot 5th Wheel Trailer

Escape Trailers is now producing a brand new tandem axle 5th wheel and have discontinued the original 5th wheel.  When they release a new model you get folks trading up, so keep an eye on the used market as there may be several of the original 5th wheels popping up for sale as we near season.

We just toured the Olivers at Quartzsite and they are almost double the price of anything else which pushes them into the Airstream market and out of the glass market.  It will be interesting to watch their 2nd attempt at manufacturing, but I would personally be hesitant to go with one.

Upper Deck Bed

I turned the bed around in a std. 5er. I extended the upprt deck to the rear to get a total bed length of 75". I then installed two steps between the bench seat to the bottom of the extension which killed the lower bunk. The P.O. was about 6'3" tall. He raised the bunk and put the lower goucho seat cushion on top to make a really long bed. I think he used a small step ladder to get into the upper bed. He had installed several hand grips to the walls to aid in getting into and out of the bed. That way you can use the lower portion of the bunk if you had some extra cushions. When someone traveled with us they just slept in the rear dinette area.

Thanks for the suggestions &

Thanks for the suggestions & ideas.  I do also wonder how Oliver will do.  They seem really nice with lots of bells and whistles.  The bunks are only 75 inches long, I think.  They could well be worth the price but since they are new and not a lot of history to look at as far as what develops with time, putting out that much money would be difficult for us.  I do hope they make it.  Seems the RV industry is picking up again maybe with a readjusted population looking to for less expensive entertainment with something to show for it as in a better use of time than being a couch potato.

5th Wheel Bed

I'm 6ft 2 and the wife is 5ft 3 I sleep at a slight diagonal on the bed and there is plenty of room left over for the important other half.

Thanks, Herman.  In reality,

Thanks, Herman.  In reality, I guess we won't know unless we actually get to see one if it is going to work for us because it seems to work for some and not for others.  Guess that is why there are so many different sizes of beds.  I had thought that the "double" bed would disappear from the scene when the "queen" emerged but that didn't happen.

Forgot that I found someone stating the length of the loft bed is 6'1" and I think the width is 54".  It still looks curved enough that I am sure that in some places the length is shorter.

We are about ready to give up on finding a fiberglass egg at this point.  Hard to find in some areas of the country and husband's employer is a slave driver so we can't get away to look until we really get away for good thus an improved RV over the pop-up.  We'll be seriously "scamping" away from here!
