To me it looks like my Scamp 13' rides a little low but i have heard that they are supposed to look low. I would like it to be higher but don't want to spend the money on a new axle if it is not necessary. Are there any other options to lift it up a little without changing the axle. Also, what are tell tale signs that I do need a new axle?
Let me know if pictures are needed and I can post some.
Your profile indicates a 2002 Scamp 13'. Mine is a 2000 13'. I've had the same question/concern. My understanding is that clearance will decline over time so that ultimately, the top of the tire will bounce/hit or rub on the overhead wheel well. I assume this can be detected by tire wear and by checking the top of the wheel well for rub marks left by the tire. I also understand that average life expectancy of an axle is 15-20 years depending on various factors, obviously. Both of our rigs are in that "watchful waiting" stage. I would assume that if you're handy to a reputable trailer maintenance/sales vendor, that they could inspect and make some assessment. I'm considering extending a couple of week excursion early this summer that I need to make to a longer trip ultimately ending up at the factory in MN. I will have an assessment done there and more than likely have a new axle installed as well as a MaxxAir fan I've been wanting.
We have a 1973 13' SCAMP that we have owned since 1974. At ca. 25 years of age, it had "settled" much as yours. We happened to be MN, and had a new axle installed at the SCAMP factory. Now, ca. 20 years later, our SCAMP is sitting lower than when the axle was replaced (but not as low as yours). I am extending the life of this axle, by keeping the SCAMP on jacks when not in use.
