Hi folks. I have a older, (no visible VIN and title says Homemade) Scamp. It is about time to replace the AC. Mine is the one mounted in the bottom of the closet, with the grill on the outside by the door. If I remember from my youthful days, a "window AC" has hot air exhaust vents on the sides and a "thru the wall AC" has them only on the back. is this the type of ac I should get? most of the thru the wall type appear to be way bigger than I can use. Thanks as always for the great insights. PG

replacing the ac inthe cabinent
you might want to take a few pictures of what you are talking about (inside and outside)... So others can maybe help you... Maybe some measurements of the front of the Air Conditioner etc too...
This is just the original standard AC in the closet set up. The current appliance in there is not the original and it gets too hot-can't vent to the out side-so I wanted to replace it with the correct type of AC. From what I understand Scamp no longer offers this configuration but I I know they used to . I am heading out to Home Despot today to see what they have to offer. I need to get the hot air out of the cabinet and that is the design of hte "through the wall " type units. Will post some pics when i do the replacement. would love to get a roof top mount but I think the unit is not built for that. has to be at least a late 90 model that came with the closet install. PG
I'm not sure if mine is original, or previous owner modified. I believe it is just a standard window air conditioner, slightly modified. In my case, it is a Goldstar brand. I recently had to pull the unit to service the drain hose (one of the fittings broke, so no drain) which is attached to the bottom of the air conditioner housing - no separate drip pan as I had expected. A hole was just drilled into the bottom lip of the housing with a drain hose attached, leading out of the floor at the front of the wheel well. The only other modification was a 6", 12 Volt fan attached to the upper, front corner of the vent in the side of the Scamp, blowing out, This fan is wired in to the air conditioner switch so that it comes on whenever the Air conditioner is turned on. There are no baffles of any kind to separate incoming and exhaust air flow from the unit.
Seems to work reasonably well, but probably not real efficient.
All this to say, you might want to pull your air conditioner out, just to see what the exact set- up is. That is, if you haven't done so already. Not a difficult task, but an extra set of hands and something to set the air conditioner on while detaching the drain and extra fan wire would be handy, at least if mine is the normal install.
I LIKE the idea of the 12 volt fan to move air out of that compartment. Be wiring that right up. I plan to pull the current AC next week and see what else it might need, up to and including total replacement. wish I cold go on the roof but I accept that that is out. One thing at a time...PG
